Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

one nap at daycare, two on the weekends question...

My son transitioned into a new (older, toddler) room at daycare about a month ago. In his previous room they napped twice a day. The new room is a one nap in the afternoon schedule. He has done great with this and takes a 2 hour nap at daycare everyday and they say he's never cranky during the morning, etc.

On the weekends he has still been taking two naps.  The morning one is usually a half hour long and the afternoon is 1-2.  Just curious, if you've been through this, did it take your LO a while to totally drop that morning nap at home? I'm not complaining, just curious about it.

  • DS2 is struggling to drop from 2 naps to one.  He goes to a mother's day out program 2 mornings a week so on Tuesdays and Thursdays, he only gets 1 nap.  On the days we're home all day, he is ready for a nap around 9am and sleeps for 2 hours then will take another 1.5-2 hour nap in the afternoon before bed at 7.

When he only gets 1 nap, he doesn't sleep longer than an hour and a half (I think he's overtired at that point and doesn't sleep well) and is a crab before bed.  I honestly don't mind that he still takes 2 naps on the days we're home...I can get more done and he obviously needs that sleep.

Also, there are occasional days that he takes a 2-2.5 hour morning nap and then refuses an afternoon nap...those days are AWFUL because he is just so tired around dinnertime.  I'm afraid that he's trying to drop the afternoon nap instead of the morning nap.

  • We did what you're doing for a few weeks after she transitioned up at daycare, and kept two naps at home. Once she got used to the one nap at daycare, she started getting much harder to put down for her second nap.  We took a weekend and kept her super busy all morning so that she wouldn't go down for a nap.  The Saturday was pretty rough, the Sunday was way better, and after that she was down to one nap at home and she was fine.  It was our issue more than it was hers.

  • They switched to 1 nap at daycare when DD turned 1.  She just dropped her morning nap at home about 2 weeks ago, and I think there will still be days when she needs one.  Today, she was falling asleep on the swingset at 10:30, and she was down for her nap by 11.  She slept for 3+ hours!
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • LO just switched to one nap a day at daycare in the middle of August.  At home she's been taking two naps (9-10 and 1-230ish).  This morning I put her down around 930 and she just played and laughed.  After about 45 minutes she was still up so I got her out.  She wasn't in a bad mood.  She fell asleep for about 10 minutes in the car around 11:20, then napped from 1-3.  I wonder if she's transitioning out of her am nap.

  • Dd doesn't go to daycare, but my mom keeps her for me when I work. She only takes one nap at my mom's house, but often takes two when she's at home. I think it's because there's more stimulation and in a different environment than home. Since she doesn't seem to have any trouble either way it doesn't bother me.

This was my LO for awhile.  She would go down at 10:30 or so, sleep for 2-2.5 hours and then refuse the afternoon nap.  I finally just moved her nap later so now she goes down around 12:30.  Problem is, she naps for an hour and a half now instead of 2.5 hours.  Probably because she's just so overtired by that point that she doesn't nap very long.  I gave up on two naps though because she is just so difficult to put down. It would take me almost an hour to get her down for nap and I just don't have the patience for that.  DD has always struggled with napping.

This is exactly what happens when I try to keep him up until 12:30 and go for one nap.  I know he needs more sleep so that's when I've been sticking with letting him take his long morning nap and then hit or miss for the afternoon.  Funny enough, he refused his morning nap today and made it until 12:45 on his own.  Hoping he gets a good, long nap!

My DS just moved rooms where they get one nap from 12:30 to 2:30. It WAS 12-3 and he was sleeping the whole time, but for some reason the Director decided that was too long. *Sigh** Anyway, on the weekends he wants a nap within 2-3 hours of waking and then 3-4 hours after waking from the first nap. They total about 3 hours. It doesn't seem to bother him for it to be different. If he starts fighting his first nap, I'll start moving it back and transition to one nap.
  • DS goes to DC 3 days a week and only gets 1 nap (2 - 2.5 hours).  On all other days, he wants and gets 2 naps - an hour at 10:00 in the morning, then a good 1.5 - 2 hours at 2:00 in the afternoon.  On DC days, we put him to bed no later than 7:30, and on non-DC days, we let him stay up past 8:00 if he wants to.  It has been like that for over a month and it seems to work, so we are sticking with it for the time being.
  • My DS took a few months to transition to one nap at home even though he was doing that at daycare. I think it's totally normal.

  • My son's daycare switched to 1 nap at 11months. But he was still doing 2 naps at home until 13 months.

  • I think that's pretty common. Every friend who had their LO in a daycare had this same experience. I think they are able to keep the kids so busy there that they only sleep once. While at home, kids get bored and want to go for a little snooze sooner.
