GD- bummed - first bad/off sugar

So my family wanted to go to a local restaurant for lunch and I thought I would give it a try. I really had thought that I had made good choices with a salad and chicken. Clearly eating out with GD is harder than I expected bc even with what I thought were decent choices, I had my highest sugar level yet. I am feeling so bummed and frustrated - more so bc I obviously made some incorrect choice(s) - I think I'm best sticking to preparing my own meals at home - my #s are always so much better than this!
Thanks for listening!

Re: GD- bummed - first bad/off sugar

  • Did you have dressing? Dressing can sometimes have sneaky sugars that throw off even te healthiest salad. One bad number every few days isn't that bad. Your doctor doesn't expect you to get it right all of the time. Mine told me they look for a trend or steady increase in numbers over a period of time before they consider insulin. Like if your fasting numbers are consistently high, you may get one dose one time a day.

  • Thanks - I know that with everything else everyone on this board deals with this is minor. I don't mean to whine - I was just feeling like I finally had a handle on this and then today's lunch happened. I did have dressing and thought I made a better choice but I really have no idea what type they served. I know that im my fridge the ranch has far less sugar than the balsamic vinaigrette so I went the way of the ranch lol but who knows really.
Thanks for the advice on the numbers - I've only been doing this a week or two and haven't say down with anyone to discuss my results since I've started. I go on Thursday so I'm hoping I get a better feel for their thoughts and expectations.

  • Eating out with GD is hard, so don't beat yourself up! With a local restaurant it may not be possible, but if it's a chain *most* had nutrition information on line so you can check the carbs in a dish ahead of time. Even when I stayed in my carb range I sometimes had higher than normal numbers, but at least it gave me an idea of what to order.

I agree with this.  Chains are much easier.  I tend to be more cautious when I eat out.  I really up my protein and cut back on carbs.  I usually get a decent number by doing that, but still sometimes have a little high of a number.  It definitely takes some time to get used to this.

  • A lot of eating with GD is trial and error. Certain carbs impact people differently. My nurse was telling me that one patient's levels will skyrocket if she has just a little rice. If I have tortillas, my levels go way up.

Plus, you also have the issue where your placenta is getting bigger and changing your chemistry as well. I got put on Glyburide because I just couldn't keep up.

  • I completely understand your frustration. I feel like I am at my breaking point most days. My fasting numbers have not been lower than 99. I'm on my first week, but I don't think they give you too much time to get those lower. I've had mostly good numbers, but some high ones at least a few times during the week. The diet is horrible and makes me feel horrible. I hate my life revolving around this. November can not come soon enough.

  • Dressing is tricky because there is a lot of sugar, but if you have a good day minus one set of high numbers occasionally you are okay. Don't be too hard on yourself!
  • Agreed that eating out is difficult, and that one high number is nothing to beat yourself up about. Seriously, GD is so weird. I have had no problem with pasta, but white bread? Forget it! So odd.
