EPO vs Cervadil

I've been taking evening primrose oil orally but not vaginally, as I'm sort of anti putting stuff up there that my doc doesn't tell me to. Then this morning, as I'm researching things in preparation for my induction on Monday, I learn that Cervadil is concentrated pig sperm. Fabbbbbulous. Looks like ill be going forth with the EPO suppositories, as I prefer that to pig sperm, all day! Just wanted to share the news for who didn't know.

I was 75% effaced last Tuesday, so hopefully I can bypass the ripening agents all together...

Re: EPO vs Cervadil

  • Just curious where you got the suppositories? I'm not 40 weeks yet but that does sound preferable to pig semen!!

  • Where are you finding that info?  Cervadil is dinoprostone, which is a prostaglandin occurring naturally in many tissues, human and otherwise.  Pretty sure they use a synthetic version in Cervadil.

The Cervadil brand is *derived* from porcine (pig) sperm, not exactly the same thing as stuffing the real deal up there, but not completely man-made either. But you're right in that its very processed. Sort of how pitocin is derived from cow hormones. Got this info from a midwife, and looking online seems to confirm it. Please do let me me know if you find anything refuting it though!

Whole Foods sells them (in pill, not suppository form), located near the omega 3/fatty acid vitamins.

EPO could help soften your cervix, but it's not going to have the same effect as Cervadil. There are also risks associated with using it vaginally. I can find a link if you want.

If you don't mind, I'd love the link. I'm having difficultly finding it on my own, and if there's any legit info as to why I shouldn't use EPO vaginally, I most def won't do it. I was under the understanding that its commonly recommended by midwives, but if there's significant risks, pig sperm it will have to be!

(Ftr, there's probably a million things derived from unsavory sounding animal by-products that I'm not aware that I use on a daily basis. I know I'm being a squeamish baby).

  • My doc told me to take 3 - 1000mg capsules (orally) a day for three days and then after those three days i can take 1 orally and 1 vaginally a day. We shall see Monday if it has ripened my cervix at all.

My mw told me to take 1000 mg of epo orally and then poke a few holes in the capsule and insert it vaginally everyday. I've been doing it since 37 weeks and no problems so far. I got the epo at trader joes but I know you can find them anywhere.

Sorry if this is tmi but I'm weird about leaving the capsule up there to "melt" so I just squeeze it in so the oil can get up there and throw away the capsule.

This thread is cracking me up!! Aurora, get a DNA test, stat!! Loppy, thanks for the link. It's heartening to know that others docs and MWs have given the okay for EPO, but since mine haven't, I'm thinking I should just hold off and take my pig semen like an adult. **stomps feet**

I'm also thinking that I should never ever again research what shit is really made of.

This is entirely NBR, but I thought I'd mention that fake raspberry flavor is derived from the anal glands of beavers. How's that for disgusting?
