MoMo twins

Today, at 7 weeks we found I have momo twins (2 babies, 1 sac, 1 placenta)

Because of how the placenta and umbilical cords as well as the babies are positioned my dr says there is little hope for a surprise membrane.

I am not sure how to process this devistating news as she also told me the survival rates are not fantastic for this type of twin.

Re: MoMo twins

  • I was told my twins were mo/mo and we found the membrane at 11 weeks. Don't panic yet - the chances are still good that they are mo/di.

As PP said, find a perinatologist ASAP. And good luck!

  • I was also just told I am having Mono-mono twins.  I have an appointment with a MFM on Wednesday and I am hoping to have a high quality ultrasound to confirm the diagnosis.

My husband is 100% against having mono-mono twins.  He has said horrible things to me, and I am a mess and cannot stop crying.  I feel I need more information and need to speak with specialist before making any decisions.

  • I am on mobile so I can't see how many weeks people are, but please don't panic. I came here after my initial u/s at 7w 2d and was freaking out that I was having mo/mo twins. I will forever be grateful to Pea-Kay, who talked me down. Sure enough, at 11 weeks the membrane was clear as day. Even if they are mo/mo (which are VERY rare) it's not a death sentence.

OP, 7 weeks is too early to be seeing placentas and umbilical cords - you're still looking at yolk sacks at that point. Do you know how many yolk sacks there were?

PP, please find the most up to date data to share with your husband. The idea that he would terminate twins because they are mo/mo frankly turns my stomach. Chances are that babies would be fine. Breathe, and wait to see the specialist before rushing to any conclusions.

  • That's really early to be conclusive about a membrane! They didn't even pick up twins at my 6 week scan. Don't stress yet and either way things could be fine. Prayers and thoughts r with u!
  • I am 22 weeks with momo girls and although we have had lots of tears and scares, all is OK so far. Find a good MFM you trust.

  • Welcome!  I just wanted to also echo that it's far too early to have a definite diagnosis of mo/mo twins.  If you do, it's definitely a higher risk pregnancy but there is definitely hope for a good outcome.  There's an entire community, website and message board devoted to mo/mo twins.
  • Congratulations! Best wishes to you and your family!

  • Do you know how many yolk sacs there were? Those strongly correlate to number of amnions. And frankly, any doctor who diagnoses momos that early is irresponsible. It's one thing to raise the possibility, but another to tell you that's what you have. We didn't see one of our dividing membranes until 22-23 weeks.

  • I was told at 6 and 8 weeks our twins were mo/mo. We looked long and hard for a tiny glimmer of something and couldn't see it. Then I was told I had di/di twins around 10. Well, I have mo/di twins and that was the easiest determination from my MFM ever. The interwebs are abuzz with lots of mo/mo to mo/di diagnosed twins. If you end up with mo/mo twins that is not inevitable doom and gloom either. (Hugs) and welcome!!

  • The survival rate is actually higher these days then what most OB physicians think (80+%) because many MFMs are having mothers deliver their babies around 32 - 34 weeks gestation to prevent cord suppression. Please don't despair. The best support groups I found were on Facebook. Search MoMo Twins and several should pop up. (I'm 14 weeks along with MoMo Twins. I'm also siggy challenged and bump from a mobile.)

  • I have one yolk sac and that was on one side of my uterus and both babies are lractically pancaked ontop of each other on the other side... I had my first ultrasound where they did not see #2. this was one for spotting when she found twin. She said there is a glimmer of hope, but with how they are she would not think there's a membrane. I am staying positive and prepared to be in it for the long haul.

My girls were the exact same way. They were so close that my do tor missed the twin in two ultrasounds and only when I went to the ER at 11 weeks did they see the second baby. Even then it took them about forty minutes to discover the membrane that looked like a single strand of hair caught in the light right. Don't worry just yet!

  • Here's my ultrasound. I'm super concerned bc the dr was like their heartbeats are different amd they are awfully close together... ill send you for a new u/s in a few weeks at radiology. So here I wait
  • Too early for a certain diagnosis.  You need to see a specialist.  The specialist didn't see mine until about 14 weeks.  At 12 weeks, the doctor thought maybe there could be one, but he really couldn't visualize it.  At 14 weeks, he could see it a little more, enough to know it was there. By 16 weeks, they could really see it, but it was still super, super thin.

Also, the doctor had to do the U/S for both 12 and 14 weeks because the tech couldn't find it.

Don't panic yet, get yourself to the specialist and let them monitor you.  There have been several successful momo pregnancies here on the board.  Hopefully they will come give you some positive stories if it turns out they really are momo.

Ask to be sent to an Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) specialist.  A regular OB should not be your total care (complimentary, yes).  A regular radiology practice isn't going to be able to handle your case.

  • I go back to the ob at 11 weeks on Oct 3. In the meantime I have an ultrasound tomorrow at the hospital and on sept 25 at our radiology department... I'm not sure after that. She did mention a specialist so I'll have to ask
