Murmur/hole in heart?

Hello, tonight while visiting DD the nurse told us that they've heard a murmur. She's stable on vapotherm at 2.0 liters and steady on o2 at 26-30% with no spells for almost three weeks. Because of this they held off on the cardiology consult until Monday, but are doing an X-ray tomorrow. They don't seem too worried, but I'm kind of freaking out. Supposedly the hole in the heart re opening is normal in preemies.

Anyone else have experiences to share? She's almost 35 weeks corrected, born at 30.

Thanks!

Re: Murmur/hole in heart?

  • DD had a murmur while she was in the NICU.  They did an echocardiogram on her and scheduled her for a follow up appt and 2nd echo with the Cardiologist at 3 months.  We got to the Cardio appt and the PA did an EKG first.  When the Cardiologist came in the room, he said based on the EKG readings there wasn't even a need to do another echo on her.  She does have to go back when she's 3 just to make sure it's fully healed, but the Dr basically said it's so common in preemies and usually closes up with no treatment needed.

  • Thanks everyone. I went back to work last week and of course now this is going on. Luckily I work about five blocks from the hospital so I can go down for the echo and to talk to the cardiologist.
