Baby Names

Nicknames

So I think DH and I have decided on the name Isobel for DD2. However he wants to call her Isa and I would prefer to us her full name. Is that confusing to a child? Will we just figure it out as we go?

I like Isa, but we don't use a nn for DD1, so I don't know... DD1 is named Amalia if that helps.

Re: Nicknames

  • It's not confusing for a child. DD2 has no less than seven NNs, plus her full name, and she doesn't get confused (also she's 9 mo.). I don't think it's any weirder than occasionally being called "honey" or "sweetheart."

  • DD will respond to Holly and Dolly, it's no big deal if he wants to call her by a certain name.

  • We're are considering the name Elijah. DH plans to call him by his full name but I plan to call him Eli the majority of the time.
Kids will always pick up some kind of nn along the way. It's not confusing, I say go for it.

I don't think it is too confusing. DS1 has one NN which we use a lot, But I made sure to use his full FN often so he would be familiar with it too. He doesn't have a problem responding to either one.

  • I consider it more of a personal connection and extra special to be called different nicknames by certain people.  If her father calls her Isa, then that will be special.

Do you two have a nn for your DD, Amalia?  Even if it is something that isn't related to her name, still works.  If she does, I don't think she will feel left out,

BTW... My nickname growing up was Bones!  As weird as that is, it is actually cool when my mom and aunt occasionally call me that.
