Natural Birth

Weighing risks against wishes...

I'm 37.5 weeks right now, haven't had any progress as far as cervical changes, even with lots of painful contractions. Due to a previous delivery, my OB and I agree that inducing at 39 weeks is best. However, I really really wanted to try to go epi free this time, and knowing how painful inductions are, I'm terrified that things aren't going to work in favor of that.

This is mostly just a vent/place to air my concerns. But, any words, experiences etc are welcome!

  • That sounds really frustrating.  I know several women on this board have had natural births following inductions and I hope they will be able to offer some encouragement.  It's also entirely possible that you won't need to be induced so there's still hope for a completely natural labor.

  • I wasn't induced but with #4 I my midwife had me get pitocin to help my labor. I was surprised that I didn't really need any pain relief with it.

  • I was induced with just cervidil and never needed pitocin (1day shy of 42 weeks) with DD2 a week ago. Went into labor on own with DD1. I didn't feel this time contractions were any worse...both times they were very bearable and neither time did I need pain meds...also helping, my husband was a great coach (we did Bradley method). Good luck!

  • Have you considered trying natural means of induction first?

Walk a lot.  Bounce on a yoga ball.  Try nipple stimulation (either you, your DH, or try using a breast pump on a low setting.  Try sex...that did it for me with both my boys!!

As PPs have said, you can also try some induction options like a foley bulb or cervadil before you jump to Pitocin.  Talk over with your OB/MW these options and see if you can find an approach you can all agree to!
