Babies: 3 - 6 Months

daily/night routine 3mo old

Mommies,
Our little guy is 3 months old now (13 weeks and 3 days old). I went to visit my parents for two weeks out of state and LO slept amazingly. He was 10 1/2 weeks to 12 wks 6 days. We discovered he needs to go to bed for the night around 7:30-8:30 before he hits rock bottom for the night and fights nighttime screaming hysterically. He vary seldomly woke during the night and usually woke up around 6am for the day. We shared a room together and he slept in his rock and play next to the bed, so when he did wake I just put his paci in and he fell back to sleep. However, when we came home all week long he has been wanting a feeding at 2-3 am. He sleeps in his own room in his rock and play. I dont' turn lights on and I try to put his paci in and close door, wait and he just cries. I give him a bottle since he's obviously hungry and then he fights going back to sleep. After being up for an hour to hour and a half he finally goes back to sleep until about 8:30. I want him to sleep through the night without a feeding and I know its possible. He is on bottles with 2oz formula and 4-4.5oz breastmilk. What am I doing wrong? Any suggestions?

  • He's too young to skip night time feedings. It may happen every now and then but he's still only 3 months.

Also, bedtimes are going to vary for a long time. DS went to bed at 11 as a newborn, then 10, 8, 7, and then did 2 weeks at 6pm, now it's 10pm again.

My advice is to not put so much pressure on your baby or yourself to expect every night to be the same

  • Your also at 3 month growth spurt and wonder week so feeding a may increase. Our LO has only gotten up in the MOTN on four separate occasions since 8 weeks and two of those nights were at 3 months for extra feedings

it should be noted that your situation VP is VERY rare.

I think we need to stop putting so much pressure on these babies to STTN. We need to remember that these are very young babies who are growing incredibly fast. Eating during the night is not a bad thing and it shouldn't be looked at in a negative way.

Don't forget even adults wake at night too - we get hungry, thirsty, have bad dreams, need to pee and yet, some ppl expect these new babies to just sleep 12 hours with no interruptions. It's just not possible. You may have some nights where your baby sleeps all night, and that's fine and greatly celebrated, but just know that these kids are going to progress and regress for years to come.
  • My LO went thru this just recently. It's probably the normal three month growth spurt. Your LO should grow out of it in a week or so if I'm right.

  • Lisa, yes I'm aware it's unique. I guess I should have rewritten it- our LO has only gotten up 4 times and been crying or fussy. She gets up in the night sometimes but always puts herself back to sleep without extra soothing.

We've never done CIO or expected her to STTN-any time she's gotten out and called for our attention I'm immediately there.
