Do Co-sleeping "rules" change?

Do they change as your LO gets older?  Broad question, I know--I'm curious to hear what has ended up working as your LO got mobile.  Last night, my DS rolled into the pillows we have on our bed to barricade him within the side car crib before we come to bed.  It got me wondering about adjustments I might need to make in the (near) future and if pillows or blankets become less of a "threat" at a certain point.

Re: Do Co-sleeping "rules" change?

  • I dont worry about pillows or blankets because DS has never buried his face into them and HATES having covers on him.  We have added a side rail though because I dont want him rolling off the bed...even then I don't trust him to be on the bed asleep unsupervised because I don't trust him to not try and climb over the thing and fall. It has happened and I about died.

  • I am pretty lax with pillows and blankets now that LO is almost a year.  And now that LO is mobile and can climb over pillow barriers, he doesn't sleep in the bed alone and sleeps in between DH and me.  We also have a side rail, but I don't rely on it anymore.

  • Certain things become less important (blankets/pillows, sleeping position, etc.) and others more important (measures to prevent mobile babies from falling, etc.) as babies get older. My nearly 2 year old DS who still bedshares loves having blankets up to his shoulders, but that wouldn't be safe for an infant. Also, since he's mobile the bedrail is of great importance. :)
