feeding issue

My twins are 5 months old and we recently started introducing solids once a day. We give them their solids after their 8:30am feed and just this past week one of my boys has been refusing his bottle but eating the solids. He eats great the rest of the day though so I haven't called the dr. I'm really not sure if I should be concerned or not. He is the bigger twin by a little more than a pound (he is about 16lbs at last check) and is acting normal not sick. So should I just let it be? Is this normal? TIA

Re: feeding issue

  • Food before one is just for fun. It's good experience but the majority of their nutrition should come from breast milk or formula prior to one year. 5 months is pretty early for solids anyways so I would likely scale back on that. How much formula/BM does he take per day? I would call the pedi if there has been a significant decline.

  • We are feeding them per our pedi's instructions. They get 6oz of BM 5 times a day and one solid feeding if I'm on the ball that day (about 3-4 times a week). So he is missing about +/-6oz a day.

24oz is probably not enough at that age. Call your pedi to verify but I would stop the solids for now.

  • One of my guys went through a phase like this when he was about 6 1/2 months old. He knew when he was going to have solids after a bottle and would just completely refuse the bottle but gobble down the food. It also had me a little worried, but the phase only lasted about a week, and he had plenty of wet and dirty diapers, didn't lose weight etc. Though I don't have the refusal problem now, the babies are just way more interested in solids than in their bottles, which is why I always offer the bottle first (besides the fact that the formula is still their primary nutrition source).

I'd say keep an eye on him, watch diapers, etc. Call your pedi if you're really concerned or if he continues refusing the bottle for a long time, but it might just be something he'll grow out of. GL!
