Craftiness assistance needed

I mentioned I want to do a BLT family costume this year, but I need help with creating it all on my own. DH and I are going to be the bread with bacon attached, SD the lettuce, DD the tomato, and our dog the mayo. (Don't worry @packerfan79, I'm not dressing our dog; she just so happens to be the color of mayo).

Can I hear some ideas on how to make this happen making it myself? I think I can probably find a tomato costume or at least an apple I can pull off as a tomato, but the other stuff I need help.

For you and YH, I think I would probably try to find matching tan sweatsuits (flattering, no; necessary, yes).  I would then get some maroon, red, pink and white felt and use that to make two strips of bacon (one equal to your neck to ankle height, the other equal to your husband's neck to ankle height.  I would affix the bacon to the sweatsuit down the front (cut in half at the waist and split at the crotch so that half goes down each leg.

For your SD, I would dress her in head to toe green with a matching green tutu and a frilly headband with some green tulle flowers (same fabric as the tutu).

  • Make large lettuce shaped leaves from green fabric. Use fabric stiffener to make them look scrunchy. Overlap and attach them to a skirt. Or attach them to a dress. Make a few smaller ones to attach to a headband.

Cut toast shaped pieces from foam. Use spray adhesive to attach brown fabric. Put sticky Velcro down each side of the toast and leave an opening for armholes.

You can paint creme fabric to resemble bacon and use fabric stiffener to make it wavy.

I'd buy a red vinyl bean bag chair cover for the tomato. Cut arm, head and leg holes. Stuff with batting.

  • Thanks, ladies! I'm going to recycle our s'more graham crackers, find a ton of tulle for the lettuce, and I may just buy the tomato costume. /lazy

  • Have fun with the costumes. I spent a couple of hours on DS2's Bee Do minion costume today. Attaching the police beacons to a headband was a son of a bitch. I was ready to punch someone. So remember, have fun with the costumes and don't hurt anyone.
