Babies: 9 - 12 Months

How to get my baby to eat veggies

Hey ladies.  My LO is 10 months old.  We started her on solids at 6 months with the usual things, rice cereal, pureed yams and the like.  She has never really loved any of it.  She is now not at all interested in pureed foods and would much rather either feed her self or eat what I am eating.  I eat a decent amount of veggies and I cant get her to do it.  I have tried peas mashed and whole, carrots (mashed and chunky) Zucchini all sorts of different things.  How do you ladies get your babies to eat the veg and what veg?

Re: How to get my baby to eat veggies

  • My advice is to keep trying.  DS changes from day to day. One day he'll eat a ton of carrots; the next day I offer them, he throws them on the floor.  Same for ___ (fill in the blank veggies).  It gets frustrating but try not to let that get to you.

Depending on the day, DS likes steamed broccoli and carrots (have to be very soft; size of my pinkie finger), roasted sweet potatoes, Swiss chard & spinach (in a pile), baked/steamed potatoes.  One of his favorite foods is actually corn on the cob; he has yet to refuse one!

  • My LO actually likes veggies, but he wasn't crazy about them in purees. He'll eat wilted spinach, suck the greens off soft steamed broccoli, eat the whole stalk of really soft steamed asparagus, chunks of sweet potato, avocado, cauliflower, etc. Some nights he'll refuse one so we try another. We just keep offering. We also show him us eating each item first because he always wants what we are eating. Some days he's being really picky I'll cut toast into spears and top it with pumpkin or a similar puree and he'll eat it that way like jam or jelly. Like PP said, he likes to feel like he's eating big boy food so maybe try more finger foods rather than purees.

  • We buy the supercheap bags of frozen veggies, usually pea/carrot/green bean/corn mix and steam them in the microwave and baby eats them with his hands like candy. I like these because it is very easy to cook up a small quantity at a time so it's not much of a waste if he's not in the miod. He also likes gnawing on whole cobs of corn (learned this on accident ;))
  • Thanks ladies I will just keep trying

  • I've had to resort to sneaking them into things... my LO loves scrambled eggs so I will mix some spinach or cauliflower puree with some greek yogurt and mix it into the eggs. Also, you can add pureed veggies into pancake batter. Otherwise, the only veggies she will eat are roasted squash, sweet potatoes, and avocado.

  • Vegetarian here... not sure if it's a coincidence or not but my baby LOVES veggies. Maybe my love of veggies has rubbed off on her. I generally feed her some variant of what I'm eating. Have you tried sweet potato fries? Yummmm. Roasted squash? Roasted peppers? Bring out their natural flavors. Veggies don't have to be bland or boring. Don't be afraid to use spices, including garlic! Mint or rosemary (not usually together!) can also be a great addition to veggies. Show your baby how yummy they can be!
  • I eat veggies with almost every meal (excluding breakfast).  The problem that I am finding is that I tend to eat a lot of raw veggies and the little monkey wants what is on my plate.  I have been trying some of the tips that people have given and have had some success.  I find that she will eat veggies that are in soups for example.  Now that I now that I can start making some yummy soups for her.  Also found that she has had massive gas since she is getting more veggies. I guess that come with the territory.
