High-Risk Pregnancy

Intro-GD

Hi there ladies, just got the call from OB yesterday that I failed my 3hour glucose test and now have a GD diagnosis. I'm waiting for a call from the specialist for my first appt but figured I'd check in here to start getting some advice. I have a great support system at home. As soon as I text DH about my diagnosis he came home with several printouts from the internet...he'd been doing some research at work and he's in this with me. I'm so greatful. This is my 2nd baby (DD) first child was DS and pregnancy was normal. This is DH first baby so all is new to him. I am 29w 1d. Look forward to chatting with you ladies.

  • Hi! I'm 14w3d and was just diagnosed this week. It's been pretty overwhelming but luckily I was able to see a nutritionist/RD right away. She gave me a meter to start testing my blood sugar levels and also a meal plan, since a lot of controlling it comes down to what you eat and when.
  • Wow, they did catch you early! My Dr doesnt even test till after 24 weeks. I hope to have a little better grasp on what all this means after I see the specialist but for now I'm just in total freak out mode.

  • Yes! I'm still in total freak out mode! Researching it online and speaking with a friend who had it eased my mind a bit. It just feels like a part-time job at this point!!
  • Hi there,

It is very overwhelming at first. The first few weeks are the hardest as you learn about what your body can and can not handle. It is nothing to be afraid of or fear though. I have learn that, for me, it is more about portion control and the time of day. I have learned that dairy is the devil before noon and I can handle a little more carbs at dinner. Fruit is nothing to fear as long as I eat it after noon.

Protein is your bestie and eating a lot with each meal can really help your numbers, at least for me. Don't let a high number scare you or make you feel like a bad mommy. It happens. You're human and this is a whole new lifestyle you're switching too. It takes time and patience.

Lets not forget the leverage we now have on our children. It completely changes the old "I carried you for 9 months, be grateful" to ----> "Not only did I carry you for 9 months, but I also gave up everything I loved to eat for you".

Best of luck and enjoy your yoplait lights!

I actually just told my 3yo that I love her so much I stopped eating cookies so she could be healthy while she grew in my tummy, so she better eat her peas to help her stay healthy. She told me, "Wow, mama, that's a lot of love!" and finished her whole plate. Great leverage ;)

OP, I know it's all super overwhelming in the beginning but you'll get the hang of it soon! There are lots of great ladies on this board, some of us 2nd or 3rd timers, who are happy to answer any questions you have. GL!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • I'm on my first week also and I am soo overwhelmed. My schedule is very different. I start my day at 11-12 noon and don't go to bed until around 1-2am. Hopefully I can get a grip on it without meds, but my fasting numbers are being a PITA!! As a PP said, it's like a part time job. Every day is spent wondering what to eat, what my number is, how to make my number better and craving what I can't have. It's really frustrating and putting a damper on the last couple months of pregnancy.

Well, I don’t go see the dietitian till next Thurs so I'm on my own to watch my diet till then. Today was day one and I don't think I did too bad. For breakfast I had a ham n cheese omlet, am snack was a lower sugar choc chip granola bar, lunch was ham n cheese sandwhich, and pm snack (right now) I'm having some carrots and ranch. This is all stuff I had on hand and I know there is lots we have that just won't fly but I just bought two weeks worth groceries then got my GD diagnosis so it's gonna be hard to not eat what we have and not waste it and afford to buy what I DO need!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • Yeah I don't see my dietician until the 17th. It's certainly a challenge . How were your numbers with the chocolate chip granola bat?

  • I don't know, haven't seen dietitian yet so I'm winging it on my own with diet for now. Not checking blood
  • I also got diagnosed this past Wednesday. I haven't heard from the dietician yet and my doctor's office said to call them if I haven't heard by NEXT Wednesday. If he doesn't call me and they have to contact him again, it's going to be another week, so I'm nervous that I won't be able to see the nutritionist until 2 weeks after I was diagnosed. I used Dr. Google and got some ideas of how I should be eating, but I can't test my blood yet. We also have an ultrasound to check on LO's size on Monday, so I'm anxious for that. I feel like waiting 2 weeks to even get into the dietician is a long time. How long have yall had to wait?

  • I was diagnosed about 2 weeks ago and don't see a dietician until the 16th. I have my glucose monitor though.

  • My Doc didn't even recommend a dietician, so I'm relying on my twin sister who had GD with her second pregnancy. :D Plus, the tips here are really helping me along. I've been testing my blood 4 times a day for a week now, and so far so good. I hear that it becomes harder to regulate the farther along we get. I hope that's not the case! The support here is great.

  • My numbers are good except for the fasting. I just don't see those going down without meds unfortunately .

  • I was diagnosed just this week Wed and I see the dietition next Thurs along with an ultrasound. I'm very anxious waiting for the appt and trying to do my best to eat right but without being able to check my blood I'm concerned I'm not doing something right. I guess if it was urgent they would get me in sooner. So I'm trying not to stress and ust do the best I can. Even just a small change in my diet now that I'm aware of my diagnosis should at least help some
