Would you have said something?

DD started at daycare last week.  It was written on her sheet yesterday that she was low on diapers.  We sent a package of 98 diapers and as of yesterday she had only been at daycare 4.5 days.  This morning I asked the teacher how many diapers DD had left and there were about 10 left.  That means that she had been going through 18 diapers a day.  That doesn't match up with her sheet, usually it shows she's been changed 7-9 times a day.  I told the teacher that it seemed like she went through those diapers really fast and the teacher said that she would make a note to change DD every 2 hours instead of every 1 hour.  Do you think I was wrong for bringing this issue up?  Do you think I said enough/said too much?

Re: Would you have said something?

  • If she's being changed 9 times a day (which sounds excessive - our center changes every two hours or if there's a BM), a package of 98 diapers should be lasting about two weeks. In this case, your concern isn't with the frequency of the changes, its with the fact that the number of diapers they're requesting from you doesn't sync up with what they're saying she's actually using.

I might not say anything for the first week, but keep an eye on it. If it continues to be so out of line, then I'd probably bring it up.

  • Ok math isn't my strong suit but her explanation doesn't even make sense.  If your math shows she's going through 18 diapers a day and she's there (I'm making a general assumption here) 9 hours a day, that's 2 changes an hour and I don't believe for a second that they're doing that.  My kid gets changed about 4 or 5 times in his entire day unless he poops outside the usual 2 hour time frame.  Sounds to me like they're using your diapers on someone else.  I'd keep the sheets they send home for the next few weeks and keep tabs on the diaper count so you can chat with them again if it seems really off.  Those shit catchers are expensive :)

  • Yes I would say something. Chances are the rest of your diapers are probably sitting somewhere else and they don't realize it.

  • Yes, I would definitely say something, and clearly mark your daughters name on the package. Sounds like they are using her diaperson on someone else.

  • Yes, her response wouldn't have been acceptable to me.  I would have referenced the figures to her to let her know that you are keeping tabs and that they aren't accounting for the overuse. It's a PITA, but if it continues to be a problem, I'd send a certian amount for that day and keep the rest at home.

And here my husband is thinking daycare going through 5-6 diapers a day is excessive! :-)  Hopefully this one a one time error (they used your diapers on someone else or they are, like another poster said, sitting somewhere), but if they ask you one more time to bring more diapers at rate that doesn't match up with how many diapers they are saying she goes through in a day, I would definitely bring it up.

  • I probably would not push it anymore this time, but I would either send in smaller quantities or put your name all over the package next time and keep track of how many they are using.  I agree that they are probably using your diapers on other babies too.  Those things are way too expensive for that!  Hopefully it was a mistake and won't happen again, but if it does I would definitely make it clear exactly what the issue is.

  • Thanks for the responses.  I didn't do the math until I came home so I wasn't exactly sure what the average per day was.  I know how many I sent in today and will keep track of how many times she gets changed from her sheet.  If it continues to be a problem I will address it with them again.

  • I would have handled it the same way and like you mentioned keep track of future diapers and speak up if needed. ::high fives:: for thinking alike.

  • Our dc requires child's name marketed on diaper and only two day supply in cubby.
  • I'd nip this now and tell them that you left 98 diapers and could they please explain how they were went through so quickly.

I prefer to set a tone of open communication and accountability.

It isn't my job to track diapers. I pay them to properly care for my daughter and using her supplies judiciously is part of that.
  • My guess is that you sent in a package and she's gone through one sleeve and they've forgotten there's another one there.

I wouldn't "confront" them, but I would say that you did the math after you talked and there should be another sleeve of diapers already at daycare for her, and could they please check.

This. I would have brought it up too.  Either they misplaced your diapers or put them on someone else.  DD has her own cubby and all her stuff goes there.
