Babies: 3 - 6 Months

How much solids at (almost) 6 months?

Little guy is almost 6 months...we've been doing purees and he loves them. He's quite an eater and a good size - probably 19 lbs?

I started back to work this week and am pumping twice at work - daycare is giving him bottles and one "meal" in the afternoon, but according to DCP he seems starving - he's nursing a lot in the evening too and 2-3 times overnight (instead of his usual 1).

I don't know if I should give him more solids? He's eating more than I'm pumping so I'm hesitant to just say to give him more milk.

How many ounces a day is your 6 month old eating?

  • It sounds like he's getting plenty of milk. If that's the case, I wouldn't hesitate to send "breakfast". My son was a big eater too. He was eating 30 oz. of milk plus 3 "meals" a day at 6 months.

  • It won't hurt him to have another "meal" at DC, but most of his calories at this age should come from milk, not solids.
  • We have a 6 month old 19 pound baby too. Here is our schedule:
Wake up 6am breastfeed. Then nap at 730. I go to work. Nanny gives rice cereal mixed w breastmilk or formula at 9am. Followed by 4oz breastmilk bottle at 920am. Then nap. Lunch 1/2 jar to whole jar fruit or veggie purée at 1130 followed by 4oz bottle bm at 1145. Play then nap. 4oz bottle bm at 230. Play then nap. 4oz bottle bm at 5pm. I get home at 530 and sometimes he is already hungry again so I bf him then or he takes a cat nap and wakes at 6pm and I bf then. At 730 or 8 I bf him one last time before he goes to bed at 8. He wakes between 2-4am and I bf him. Then wakes at 6am to start day again.

  • I've got a big eater and he eats 1 1/2 jars of purees a day and over 30 oz of formula and loves it all and handles everything beautifully. Daycare feeds him 1/2 a jar twice a day and I feed him 1/2 a jar in the evening and we rotate fruits and veggies.

  • My DD(she will be 6 mo on the 16th) goes through five 5oz bottles throughout the day, one before daycare, three at daycare and one before bed.  She eats cereal once at daycare and once when we get home. Every LO is SO different, you just have to use your best judgement and do what you feel is right for your LO.

  • I usually do about 2 oz per day either after my lunch or dinner which fall between her feeding times. As a pp said the majority of calories should not he coming from solids though. They are just getting used to food so it shouldn't be used as nourishment. I breastfeed most of the day so I really don't know how much bm she gets but her bottles are usually 5oz.

  •  Well at 5 months our DS was having 40oz of milk a day. Doctor said to start him on solids... It is recommended to start with 3-5ml portions twice a day and gradually go up to 15ml portions.

He wanted more, ended up having 15ml of purées on the second day, and his milk intake slowly decreased to 35-38 oz, which was the goal because 40oz at 5months is a bit much. He takes it all like a champion.
