Travel toy ideas

It's pretty short notice but I just booked a trip out to visit my parents at the end of the month for 9 days. Of course I'll be taking Ava and doing it solo again. Looking forward to seeing my family but not looking forward to the multiple plane rides.

I want to get her a few new toys to keep her busy on the plane , hopefully for more than 30 seconds. Any recommendations? Preferably something that isn't noisy and that I can attach a clip to so she can't throw it.

Thanks!

Re: Travel toy ideas

  • In my experience it's not so much the toy itself that matters, it's that it's NEW. When we go on trips I like to get a couple random things just from the dollar store or the clearance aisle at target, a couple new books, and a couple new snacks that they've never had before. The newness is what makes it special and keeps their attention, so hide it until the big day(s)! Maybe download a few new apps/games on your phone or tablet too. Try them out secretly on your own first so you know how to play them and know for sure that they're good ones!

  • Color Wonder markers/coloring books are great for planes because they can't write all over the seats or tray tables.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely go buy some items from the dollar store, that's a great idea. I was looking at the aqua doodle and I think I'll get that as well. Ava has no interest in watching movies yet but she does love my iPhone so I'll get some new apps for her.
    Sadly no tablet here, I must be one of the only ones who doesn't have one yet.
  • @dbllesmer yes I will post when we get back and let you know what worked for us :)

    @corgimum we actually have that exact apptivity case! However it only fits my husbands phone - he has the iphone 4 and I have the 5, which doesn't fit :(  I ended up buying a waterproof/ drop proof case for mine though after I dropped it into a bucket of water. So now Ava can munch on it as much as she likes.

    @BethandBen I was just looking at those quiet books on Amazon! I was going to try to make one but I have to be realistic and I really don't think I'll be able to get it done by the time we have to leave. I'll probably just buy this one - glad to hear some feedback on it :)

    Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Apptivity Case
    We just bought this FP Laugh and Learn "Apptivity Case" for our upcoming trip. I realized that my husband was so eager to go with this as the "new toy" because who has the iphone? Oh right, that would be me. Whatever, I am taking his phone and he can sit with Seamus on his lap playing with this thingy.
    :D
    I bought this but didn't read the label closely and it didn't fit my iphone 5.  Boo!

  • We just had an 8hr road trip. I packed:

    * aqua doodle

    * magnedoodle

    * books with music buttons

    * a hundred stickers and a notebook

    * a season of sesame st on the iPad

    * a little bag with zippers to pull toys out of and put in

    * touch & feel books

    * snacks

    * drinks

    And despite having this huge bag of tricks, we still had moments of boredom. Ugh
