Puzzles

I had no idea kids at this age could do puzzles! Nat was doing two puzzles yesterday--matching animals and matching colors. She did both perfectly. Then I read that this skill develops between 16 and 18 months. Anyone else notice their kids developing this skill?

Re: Puzzles

  • I had no idea as well. A friend gave me some puzzles for A and I haven't touched them in a year. I'll be giving those to A to try out again. Thanks for putting this out there.

  • We have a ton of the M & D ones that have animal shapes (where the picture under the shape matches the animal). We've really started working with her on these ones in the last month or so, and she's starting to get really good at them.

  • Skyler does them at daycare and I just bought her 3 M&D ones at Carter's this weekend.  She seemed to like it but she doesn't always put them in correctly, as in they don't face the correct way, but it is the correct animal.

  • Lucia has loved them for a long time now! She's good at the ones where one piece fits into a hole (like animals, or shapes) but hasn't figured out harder ones where you have to put 2 pieces together yet.

Yeah, Nat can't put two pieces together quite yet. She really tries with the train tracks. She's getting pretty good at that, but regular puzzle pieces aren't harder for her.

  • Ian likes puzzles...but mostly likes to take the pieces out and sling them everywhere!  He will sit and try and match things up and does a pretty good job at it.  I think puzzles are very good for "teaching".  We have "chunky" puzzles that he just has to find the piece and put them in a hole.  At this age, I don't think they should be able to do puzzles where putting pieces together is required...the chunky puzzles and putting pieces in a hole is normal.

  • Thanks for the reminder! We have tons of M&D puzzles but Jackson would just throw the pieces and hide them so I put them away in the closet to bring them out later! Yay for "new" toys!
