Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Dropping swaddle questions...

When you drop the swaddle, do you do it at both naps and night at the same time? Or start with one or the other? I wondered if it might be confusing to her if I swaddle her sometimes and others I don't. She is only 12wks old (will be 3 months this week), but she has been waking more frequently at night & naps and when I go to give her the paci, she acts like she is struggling to get out of the swaddle. Although I'm so nervous to drop it because a couple of times when she is acting like she is trying to break out in the middle of a nap (and woke up), I went ahead and let her arms out and she just got really mad and wouldn't go back to sleep. I feel like right now she gets frustrated with the swaddle, but also won't sleep without it. Ugh.

Re: Dropping swaddle questions...

  • What makes you think she doesn't want to be swaddled? I knew my lo was ready when she was always busting her arms out. Then I transitioned her to the halo sleep sack swaddle which swaddles with arms out. She still uses that.

  • She has started waking up a lot through naps and night. And when I go in to give her the paci, it seems like she is frustrated with the swaddle and is trying to get her arms out.
  • We stopped swaddling for naps first. then at night we used the halo swaddle with wings and only wrapped then around the body with arms out that way they still feel secure.

When you stop swaddling the first few nights don't always go well. Their might be more frequent night wakings. After night 3 our LO adjusted.

  • We stopped because she rolled over in the swaddle so it was instant. but we had the sleep suit, which she still uses. I was hoping to wean when she turned 6 months (last week) but she was teething, and then she just caught a cold from her grandma so I feel kind of bad taking her "security" away....

  • My girls stopped being swaddled when they were breaking out of the swaddle consistently.  Yes, they probably woke up more at first because their arms still startled them, but they got over it pretty quickly.  This was probably around 10-12 weeks.

  • Ditto the Halo Sleep Sac Swaddle. We've tried arms out in that but the swaddle around his body is comforting to him. DS is 14 weeks and we've just started to try it and he's waking up about the same
