Babies on the Brain

Deciding between two jobs...

I have been working night shift for the past two years (7pm-7am) and recently switched to day shift.
Now there is a night shift charge nurse position open. It would be about $10,000/year more. Along with the pay increase is more responsibility and stress. I have done relief charge before as a fill in. We always are short staff and its not fun.

I am looking forward to having a normal schedule. Also to add to it I am going back to school next August for my masters. Working day shift would be easier since I also will have clinicals during the day too. If I stay on day shift I always pick up 2 extra 12 hour shifts a month to pick up the difference. FYI Dh is a stay at home dad.
What would you do?

Re: Deciding between two jobs...

  • From your tone, and I could be wrong, it sounds like you aren't sure the financial benefits really outweigh the cons of going back to a night shift that is even more stressful than your previous night shift. If you guys are okay with how much you're making now, I would stick with day shift, Especially with school starting, you don't want to burn out.

  • I'd pass. For me, a stressful job with poor hours would not be worth it. I gave up a high stress job with crazy hours and lots of on-call for a pay cut that is a regular hour day shift job, and I never regret it. I know I was really torn about the move at the time but I'm so thankful I decided to make this decision. Of course, if financially you need the extra cash, you might choose differently.

  • Im doing the stress/crazy hours now. There are some days when i never know when I will be home. I am totally open to the idea of a new job, especially since we are sort of TTC right now. Its probably not worth it honestly.
  • What does your DH think is best? Do you need the extra dough? As @themrsasmitty said, definitely consider the well being of your family in general! Is the stress worth the extra money?

The hubs said its my choice. If I
Chose to stay on day shift I will HAVE to pick up 2 extra 12 hour shifts a month to make up the pay difference. (I work 3 12 hour shifts a week now).

  • You need to keep your emotional/family well being in mind as well as your financial aspects.
This!  I would pick up the extra two shifts as your DH stated and stay Day shift. Best of luck with your decision.

  • I can tell you that personally, there is no amount f money that would make me want to deal with what our charge RNs deal with. And, if at some point in the future the heavens open up and I finally come off the waiting list and go to day shift, I highly doubt I'd go back if I didn't have to. I can't wait to be on th same schedule as DH, our future children, and the rest of our friends and family. Far outweighs the pay cut. Sorry for the novel, I just got home from work, lol!
