DS will not take milk out of anything besides bottle!

He's on rice milk for a dairy intolerance and I cannot get him to drink it out of a sippy! We have like SIX different kinds of sippy cups and he drinks water out of all of them just fine. But put the same exact stuff that goes in a bottle in a sippy? He wants nothing to do with it. He's 14 months old and still getting 3 bottles! This morning for example he ate all of his breakfast great. Put rice milk in his new "big boy cup", and he took a couple swigs. Now he just walks around holding the cup (saying "bee bop bup" for big boy cup) but won't drink it. Do I just not give him a bottle? I don't want him to not get ANY milk--he gets suuuuuper cranky without his bottle! I wish I knew what to do. Any thoughts?

  • I'd let him just lug around his sippy cup going "bee bop bup"- it sounds freaking adorable!! Sorry that's not helpful at all ;) Go blue!

Can you try taking the bottles away for a day and only offer a sippy and see what he does? It might be a tough couple days while he transitions but if he wants the milk and the sippy is his only option then I think he'll start drinking from it.

This is what I'd do too.
  • Are any of the cups you've tried just a regular straw without the anti-spill attachment? DD refused to drink milk from a cup until we tried just a regular straw cup like you would get at a restaurant. It turns out she just didn't want to work hard to get her milk and most other dippy cups were too much effort for her! I've heard the same from some other parents too. I bought some of the Take n Toss straw cups and give her milk with her meals only, because I don't want her spilling it all over the house.

We do have a regular straw cup, yes. He'll guzzle water but put milk (or even his formula) in there and he totally gives it the side eye and won't drink from it! :-(

  • We are in the same boat. My guy is 16 mos and on coconut milk due to dairy allergy. And he loooooves his bottles. He gets 3-4 a day. He's mastered sippies for juice or water but milk is a no-go. I tried getting rid of the bottles for two days and it sucked. He never stopped crying and then I saw a molar popping through so I decided it wasn't a good time.

But, I have cut down on the bottles by just offering him water in them as much as possible. I got liquid vitamin D and calcium supplements in case I just can't get any milk down the hatch with sippies.

Totally agree. I know it might be a rough few days, but it sounds like he's figured out he will get a bottle if he holds out ;) they're smart! I'd just offer sippies only- no bottles- and let him figure it out. He won't starve, but he might be a little cranky! It'll pass in a few days!

This.  He knows the bottles are still an option.  Bee bop bup is frickin' adorable as PP's said!

  • Same here. DD will drink water out of a sippy but if you put millk in it, she'll make a face, shake her head no, and throw the cup on the floor.

I'm still breastfeeding and just stopped pumping at work, so she HAS to start drinking cow's milk at daycare or I'm not sure what's gonna happen there.

I didn't try mixing cow's milk and momma's milk half n half so I'll try that tonight at home (still have some frozen).

I'll be reading this thread closely for help :)

    Good luck!

  • I have a 17 months old who loves water in a sippy but refuses milk. I have every sippy known to man and the best I can get is like 2 oz between breakfast-dinner. I still give her a bottle first thing in the morning and at bedtime. I think next week I'm cutting the morning bottle out and see what happens. She is not a great eater which is why I let this go on for so long. Good luck to everyone. It's nice to know I'm not the only one with this issue.
  • We are in the same boat! DD is 16 months and still gets a morning and evening bottle. Everything but milk is fine from a silly or a straw. She is on soy milk so doesn't get much other calcium like cheese or yogurt so I want her to get as much milk as possible. No advice but also relieved to know other kids have the same problem! The girl lives her bottle, so unless the pedi totally freaks out about it I will probably wait till she's more ready to give it up.
