How long in recovery?

Assuming all goes as planned, what is the time frame from being in the OR to being in the recovery room? How long were you in recovery before allowing visitors in to see you? I'm just worried about my daughters coming in and seeing after surgery if I'm not really myself yet. Thanks ladies :)

Re: How long in recovery?

  • My csection is scheduled for 8 am on Sunday. The family is asking what time thy should be there, and what time they will be able to see me. I have no clue :)

  • About 2 hours in recovery, once I could feel my legs again. My daughter wasn't allowed to come to recovery so we waited until that night for her to come see us in the room.

  • In the OR for maybe 1 hour total? And in recovery for maybe 2? After recovery I was moved to the maternity ward. No visitors allowed in recovery. I didn't have visitors until the evening, about 8 hours after DD was born. If you're worried about your DDs seeing you out of sorts, why don't you just call when you're ready instead of telling them they can come at X time?

  • I was in the OR for about an hour, maybe a little more because DS was breech and lodged up in my ribcage and it took them a little longer to push him down.

I was in recovery for around an hour and a half where I bf while waiting to regain feeling in my legs.  Visitors were not allowed in recovery and had to wait until I got to my pp room.

My family didn't listen when I told them not to come until at least 11am (my cs was scheduled for 9am).  They came at 9 and were waiting quite a while and started getting impatient.

  • I am guessing 45 minutes in recovery then moved to my room. My family was able to come into my recovery room but DD was in the nursery getting cleaning up and such so they were there watching her. Fine by me, last moments of peace and quiet for a long while.

Mine was a scheduled cs for 330pm. My ob had a surgery before that went longer than expected. About 2 hours longer. So my parents were there the entire time in the waiting room. I don't think I went to the OR until almost 6pm.

  • I was in recovery for about 2 hours and only DH was allowed in there with me.  He left when the took LO to the nursery because his blood sugar was low (I made DH go with him since I couldn't).  Family came to PP room once I was taken there.  My CS wasn't planned, so family was in the hospital waiting the whole time, but they got to see LO in the nursery when I couldn't (that was the hardest part!)
  • Maybe 1-2 hours, I think. I don't remember it being long between being stiched up and being in the recovery room. I was REALLY tired at that point (and hungry)!, but I could have handled a couple of visitors by then.

  • My surgery was about an hour and was in recovery for about 2 hours. No visitors except DH allowed until pp room. Also allow time for your surgery to be pushed back or take longer. So I would say at least 4 hours after before visitors.

  • I was in surgery for about an hour and in recovery for maybe an hour and a half...I had horrible shakes and was not able to move till my toes wiggled and I could feel it. We had no visitors as no family in the area. I also had a emergency c.

  • I was told as soon as I could move my legs I could leave recovery but they had no rooms available so I ended up being stuck there for 4 hours.
  • DS was delivered at 4:57 pm, we were moved out of recovery and ready for visitors in our permanent room around 7:45

  • A lot of that depends on your hospital. Our hospital is new with a whole maternity floor. I had an emergency c section at 1am with massive complications so I was in surgery for 2 hours. After that I was in the recovery room for about an hour and DH was there. Then I went to my "delivery room". It's where I would of delivered vaginally but its like a regular PP room couch for DH, the whirlpool tub etc. There my mom came but only immediate family is allowed. So I guess I got there at 4am. Every woman gets transferred from the PP room to a family room. It's like a small apartment. Couch that turns into a bed for DH, has a fridge, walk in shower and I got there around 3pm and that is where non immediate family and friends could see us. So on your hospital tour I'd ask what their policies are
  • Strangely enough, I was not in recovery at all after my last section. I had a semi-emergency section around 7:00 on the Saturday before Memorial Day. I'm not sure if they were understaffed or what, because I spent an hour or more there with my DD the year before. I literally was in my room within 10 minutes of the doctor finishing. It was kind if crazy.
  • I was in and out of the OR in under 45 minutes including the spinal tap. I was so emotive when they plopped my little Henry on my chest while they were stitching me up. My husband and I had tears running down our faces.

Then I was wheeled over to recovery, babe on the boob with my mom and husband by my side. I think I was there about an hour before being transferred to my room.

It all went by very quickly and the second they cleaned him up (which was within eye and ear shot) my son was with me. I tear up just thinking of how magical that moment was.
  • Alexis was born at 12:49 and Lucas came in around 2.

  • My section last time was at 6 pm and our parents were in the waiting room--my mom snuck in behind a nurse when I was wheeled in.  She said Mom could stay if she was quiet and stayed in the corner haha.  The rest of them came in about an hour later.

  • With 2nd section, they took me down for my surgery @ 5:30 and I was in my PP room around 8. I had issues with my BP bottoming out in recovery, though, so had to stay longer than anticipated. If all had gone well, I would've only spent approximately 30 minutes in recovery.
  • I was rolled into the OR at 5:45 am. Got my spinal and DD was born at 6:11. She was a little cold so she and DH went to the NICU to get warmed up. By the time I was sewn back up I was returned to my room and about the same time DD and DH rolled in. It was about 90 minutes later. My hospital does not have recovery on the maternity floor. DD wS 4 weeks early.
