High-Risk Pregnancy

PAI-1 (Elevated Plasminogen Activators)??

After having a recurrent miscarriage panel done, it was found that I had elevated plasminogen activators, which is also known as PAI-1.  Mine was a 64. Normal range is 4-43.   Has anyone else been diagnosed with this? I was told I could be high risk after conceiving next time..I have an appointment with a hematologist in a few months and was hoping to find others in my situation!  Thank you!

Re: PAI-1 (Elevated Plasminogen Activators)??

  • After two consecutive miscarriages I was sent to a RE for recurrent miscarriage work up.  Just got my lab results this week and I tested for PAI-1 and MTHFR (my body is not absorbing folic acid).  I have an appointment w/ my doctor in a couple of weeks to go over all the results.  I was relieved to find out what is wrong with me but I am also nervous about my next pregnancy.  For the PAI-1 my doctor has put me on a baby aspirin everyday until I get pregnant then I will switch to daily heparin injections.  For the MTHFR I have to take a prescription strength pill consisting of folic acid and b vitamins.

Your hematologist will probably put you on a blood thinner as well possibly in the form of baby aspirin and/or heparin or lovenox injections.

  • I didn't get a number result, but I have two copies of the PAI-1 4g/4g mutation. I've had three miscarriages. My RE wanted to start lovenox and aspirin but I had a SCH. When I started seeing the MFM and the SCH had resolved he left it up to me to start Lovenox. He said since I hadn't ever had a blood clot nor had my mom or sisters I didn't necessarily have to be on it. He said with the mcs I could if I wanted to. My cousin has the same mutation, never had a loss, but her mom had a blood clot so she's on a baby aspirin. So basically each doctor handles it differently.
