Baby Names

Name Dilemma

It has been really difficult coming our with a name for our baby girl. DH and I have only agreed on a few names. I like Sophia, even though its way too popular, but DH vetoed it because of the popularity. He then agreed to it if we used the Sofia spelling. Then we both decided to take it of our list when we realized my sister in law who is getting married soon will have a stepdaughter named Sophia. DH also suggested Victoria, however this is my mother's name and fear this may cause some controversy with family members. Now, he came up with the name Aria and this is his favorite name. He loves the meaning since he is a musician and the name is growing on me. I'm just afraid she'll have pronunciation issues for her entire life since its not that common. What do you think? We would name her Aria Rose. Rose is a family name after my great grandmother Rosario, but she went by Rose.

Re: Name Dilemma

  • My mother thinks people would pronounce it like area.
  • Aria Rose is beautiful!  I don't think there will be any pronunciation issues.  Like PP, I can't think of how you could possibly mispronounce it.

  • Even if people aren't familiar with the musical term aria, I think they'll most likely pronounce it correctly.  Its pronunciation follows the most common phonetic rules.

The only likely mispronunciation would be "AIR-ee-uh" which people won't do because that's already the pronunciation of "area."  A less likely mispronunciation would be "uh-RYE-uh" but a person would be working uphill to get that out of "Aria."

    I say go for it!

  • I think it could be easily mispronounced. Just because its on a "popular" list doesn't mean a lot of people know it.  For a similar name, how about Arianna Rose?
  • Aria is lovely. I don't think she'll have a problem with pronunciation. I think it's very intuitive. How else would you even say it?

This. Also it's getting more popular. It's being used in a couple TV shows. People are familiar with the name.

  • A few mispronounciations won't be the end of the world. I don't think you'll have a lot of trouble with it. It's a beautiful name and I prefer it to the choices you have vetoed.
