PAI-1 (Elevated Plasminogen Activators)??

After having a recurrent miscarriage panel done, it was found that I had elevated plasminogen activators, which is also known as PAI-1.  Mine was a 64. Normal range is 4-43.   Has anyone else been diagnosed with this?  I have an appointment with a hematologist in a few months and was hoping to find others in my situation!

Re: PAI-1 (Elevated Plasminogen Activators)??

  • I had a panel done after my loss. My loss was a second tri at the end of March and had the b/w drawn for the panel June 5. My panel came back normal with the exception of the PAI-1 which like yours was elevated. I made an appt with a hematologist and saw her a couple of weeks later. In the meantime researched the heck out of it although I found that there isn't a ton of info on it. In speaking with the hematologist she mentioned that the PAI-1 is similar to HcG in that it naturally increases during pregnancy. DH suggested that we run the b/w again testing the PAI-1...turns out that my levels had not yet decreased from the pregnancy. I'm not sure what your calendar looks like as far as your previous loss and when the b/w was done but it might be worth re-testing.

Before we re-tested we had already spent about an hour with the doctor (who had struggled with IF herself) discussing the PAI-1 and it's correlation with loss. Long and short we learned that an elevated PAI-1 by itself is highly unlikely to be a cause of loss. Coupled with something else it can be cause for worry. When I asked the Dr if she was in my shoes what she would do she told me nothing. Prior to finding out that my levels were actually normal she told us that for peace of mind I could take lovonox (sp).

I'm hoping that my rambling makes sense. Insomnia is kicking my butt right now. GL with everything!
