Do the same set of chores every day of the week (i.e. Monday is bathrooms, Tuesday is dusting and floor mopping), etc.

Re: Cleaning / Chores page

  • I'm a teenage boy trapped in a 30yo mom body.  I suck at pitching in around here.  I'm making a list and want to make it manageable for every day.    I can't decide how to do it.

It will have checkboxes because I'm nuts for a checked off list  If those don't work I'm implementing a sticker or reward system for myself haha!  I'm 9.

  • Pretty much what Mirasktastic said. I need specifics for checking off purposes. And I wouldn't be good at Mon are bathrooms, etc. because if I missed a day than logically it would move to the next day's list. Ex- Mon bathrooms if missed would move to Tues. but in my mind I'd be thinking, "Well, I missed Monday so the week is f-ed." Then i'd do nothing.
Also I like how you called yourself a teenage boy and a 9 y/o in the same post :D

  • I agree with you ladies, I think I can break down the chores over every day to equal something super reasonable, like 30 minutes.  What's happening now is that I feel too "busy" during the week, and have to marathon clean for 8 hours on Sunday.  It is awful.

  • @amandad715

I'm either 13 and embarrassed that I like stickers.

Or I'm 9 and can't wait to be a teen

    Or I'm 30 and lazy

  • I made a list of what needed to be do e and just slowly stared assigning them days. I was able to work it out that I have 2-3 things each day and it doesn't feel overwhelming.

  • I've tried doing daily but by the time I get home from work, get both kids fed, bathed and in bed, then eat dinner, it is 9 o'clock and just not going to happen. So I do marathon cleaning on Sunday. I do try to split that so it's upstairs one week and downstairs the next, so it's not as bad.

  • I prefer both 2 and 3 so I voted SS. I have the hard core stuff like laundry, mopping, washing the toilet etc in specific days, but I straighten up what needs to be everyday.

  • I votes SS because I like to get things done each day, but not necessarily the same thing every monday.  Sometimes life gets in the way and I get no chores done on a given day so that schedule would tweak me out.  I generally try to maintain the house during the week (wash dishes,load/unload dishwasher, laundry, vacuum, pick up toys, grocery shop).  On the weekends I do the more heavy duty things like mop, dust, clean bathroom.  Sometimes I just can't take how unorganized and filthy everything is and I go nuts.  DH thinks I am crazy bc he doesn't ever think the house is a mess but on days when I am in a cleaning tizzy he has learned to stay away or to comply with any request I give him.

  • I should have checked SS. I do all cleaning/grocery/laundry/misc errands on thurs or fri when I'm off work and when the boys are in school and I only have DD. I pick up DS2 at 1230 so it's just the mornings. It's amazing how much I can get done with just DD. if it doesn't happen during that timeframe, it's probably not going to happen (with the exception of things like dishes that are daily).

I make a list too so I can check things off to feel better about myself. Sometimes I add extra things I did to my list just so I can check them off!

I would love to do the first option but I'm like Betty and Oragami: I do what I can during the week and get the bug to scrub twice a month. Just treading water basically. :-/

  • I voted SS.  I think I should do a list with specific things each day, and maybe this post will motivate me, but right now I just do things as they need to be done.  We do the dishes/clean up the kitchen every day, tidy up every day, etc.  I do mine and DD's laundry when the hamper gets close to full because we both have so many clothes that we can wait that long, haha (H does his own laundry), I vacuum, scrub things, etc as I feel they need to be done.  We have 3 dogs and I shed a lot too, so vacuuming happens a few times a week, but other things I just do on a whim/before they get visibly dirty.  When I was working we had a house keeper who came every other week to do the scrubbing, so all we had to do was tidy up/dishes/vacuum in between her visits/laundry, but when I became a SAHM some things needed to get cut.  Next big promotion my H gets that is totally the first thing that I am adding back in, I hate deep cleaning!

  • SS I stumbled across "fly lady" cleaning a couple months ago and use that as my guide for any given day or week and it helped us develop some better habits. The house isn't spic and span by any means but it's not as bad as it used to be.

  • We have a cleaning lady come every other week, so that the week in between, I really only need to do upkeep, vacuuming, dusting where it needs it, spray down the bathroom, that kind of stuff. But the kitchen gets cleaned everyday. It gets freaking filthy.

  • I would rather do the same thing every day of the week. Realistically, I put everything off until Sunday night when L goes to sleep. The only thing that gets done every day is the dishes.

  • I have certain big things that I only do on the weekends and others during the week. Since I work from home, I do the x amount of cleaning time during the day. Like I will have a conference call in 20 minutes so I will hang clothes/do a load of laundry until time for the call to start. Sometimes I do a reward system too: no coffee until I make the bed, no 2nd glass of wine until I sweep the kitchen/breakfast room.

  • Once your list is complete please send it to me so I can sticker chart myself on this. I have been wanting to put together a chore chart for myself for months (i.e. since I have moved into my apartment) but just haven't done it.

  • SS: I pick up the little things here and there, do laundry and dishes daily but we have a cleaning lady who does the heavy duty stuff.  She does in 5 hours what it would take us 2 whole days.  I don't think it would ever get done with out her.
