My twin boys were born 8/28 at 30 weeks. Twin A (Vincent) has had multiple BM's. He is a little bigger than Baby B (Dominic) and has had an easier time. Dominic has not had a BM yet and it's been 96 hours (4 days). He also has greenish stuff in his belly (bile, most likely). So far all his X-rays, measurements, everything have been great. No sign of blockage or infection. But I'm freaking worried! I'm hoping to catch the docs on their rounds tomorrow. Any one have experience with their preemie not pooping for a few days after delivery? What was the result?
@aliwisewomen have you mentioned your concern to the nurse taking care of your LO? How do they know he has green coming from his belly? Is he vomiting? When my LO hasn't pooped they gave her a glycerin suppository and within seconds it was out.
@throw3ks yes, their nurses are all over it. They gave him a suppository today but it hasn't worked yet. And they know about the green because they have been suctioning stuff out of his belly. They have been suctioning since he was born but it hasn't went away since they started him on breast milk, which they were hoping would stimulate a bowel movement. Basically things are not moving. Was hoping there was someone who had been through a similar situation.
One of my twins (born at 28w) had trouble pooping the first few days. I can't remember exactly how long it took but it was a few days. I think I blocked most of it out because it was too scary thinking about NEC. I remember he had some green bile too. He ended up needed some suppositories to get him going and then once things got moving, he was fine. I hope everything is okay with your little guy and the Dr. can answer your questions!
Also do you know if they pooped at delivery or inutero? I later learned through my placenta report that both had meconium staining on their membranes, so he had pooped before he was delivered.
@Mrs.Alice- as far as I know they didn't poop inutero. I'll be headed to the NICU to try to catch their doc while she discusses what they plan to do next. Thanks ladies!
Mine had trouble pooping for several weeks. She would have to be manually stimulated every few days to make her go. She grew out of it at a few weeks old and would go on her own, but she would still only go once every day or two for a while. Good luck with your boys!
We had a very similar problem and had a NEC scare, but her condition turned out to be a rare occurrence that was a red flag for things to come (she had a meconium ielius). The suppositories didn't work, and they ended up having to use an enema to try to clear the MI. Once they cleared that, the residuals improved gradually.
It's basically a plug of meconium that obstructs the bowel. Our neos weren't very clear with me at the time because they were still piecing symptoms together and waiting for her newborn screen results to come back, but they said that occasionally that can happen with preemies and the immature bowel. Later on when we got my LO's CF dx, we realized that her MI was a big indicator for CF (and a lot of her other NICU complications were related to that as well).
My little guy might have the plug too. He did have a BM yesterday and they gave him another suppository today so hopefully we will see some more poopy soon! Haha!
