Cloth Diapering

If you send to daycare

I have a question for any of you cloth diaper momma's who send their LO(s) to daycare. My husband and I both work full time, although I still have two weeks of maternity leave. I've gotten into a good groove of washing our cloth diapers every other day, and can make it another half day to a full day just depending. How do you do it with daycare?
How many diapers would you typically send? Do you also send disposables in case of an emergency or would that even be necessary? What do you send them in? Your regular diaper bag or a separate bag just for daycare? What size wetbag do you send? If you rinse them out when you get home, and are the diapers okay to be soiled for that long and then rinsed later on? If you air dry, how are they ready by the next day, or is that why a three day supply would be necessary? Sorry for all the questions, just want to be sure we have all we need and don't have to scramble the days before we start. Thanks in advance.

Re: If you send to daycare

  • We started with 24 dipes. We sent 5 in her DC backpack every day, with a large wet bag for dirties. We wash Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. We have 5 wet bags, so enough for 2 for school and 2 for home. We almost never had to spray, it was either EBF poo that goes straight in the washer or ploppable. We did have some sposies there when she was a NB as backup, but she only needed them a few times. After she outgrew those, I sent a few pockets I didn't care for to stay at DC as her backups.
We now have 5 best bottoms covers and a dozen inserts and that is what we use nights and weekends, so that gives us more cushion on having enough dipes. We machine dry (gasp!) so drying time isn't an issue for us.

  • I try to keep daycare stocked with 5 diapers.  He's gone through 4 max in a day, so I figure that gives us a little wiggle room.  If he ever goes through 5, I might up it to 6, but we'll cross that bridge when we get to it.  I do laundry every other day, though I could stretch it to every third if I absolutely had to.  Daycare provides sposies for the other kids (LO is the only one CD'd in his room), so I suppose they could use those as backup if they ever needed it.  FWIW, I think I have 15 dipes for daycare.

I use BG4.0 pockets, and make sure that the pockets are hanging to dry before I go to bed at night - they're dry in the morning to stuff for daycare (part of the reason I love our BG4.0s is that the pockets dry nice and quick).  I just stick them in the bag with his bottles to take to daycare in the morning.  In the morning, I'm responsible for stocking his diaper area with the clean dipes.

During the day, the DCP puts his dirty dipes in a small step can (that I provided) that sits outside the door to the outside (all dirty diapers go outside).

In the evening, I have a gallon sized ziplock that I stuff all his dirty diapers into (they bag the poop diapers in addition), and I just air that out at night to take in the next morning. I suppose I could be using a wetbag for this purpose, but I haven't gotten around to that quite yet (this reminds me that I totally should be doing this - I'll be rotating through the two medium-sized wet bags I have).

I don't worry about spraying or rinsing, since LO is EBF'd at this point, so no need to worry about his poop.

I think that covers all your questions - hope this helps!

  • We just started daycare last week. We send 8 diapers and a medium sized wetbag. The most they have used is 6. We send a wet dry bag or medium bag for the diapers. They individually wrap each in a thin plastic bag before putting in the wetbag.

  • We've been doing CDs at daycare this past week (her old daycare wouldn't do them, so she was in sposies). I send 7 and she has come home with 2 unused each day. I send them in a tote that isn't my diaper bag along with a medium wetbag. When I get home, I transfer them over to the large wetbag and wash every other night.

  • I use a separated daycare only bag because its easier for me. I used to send 5, maybe 6 diapers and a medium sized wet bag. Now, my dcp actually uses all of her own cloth diapers on all the kids there, even the ones who wear sposies at home. So now, I just send 1 diaper and a wet bag. She puts the CD I send her in in the wet bag and puts the CD I send on her before she leaves. It's awesome.

  • We send 6-7 diapers to daycare each day.  He usually only uses 5, but I like to have extra.  We send them in a wet/dry bag that comes home with us each night.

We wash Tues., Thurs, and Sunday as well.  We also use pockets so they do dry quickly enough that if I get laundry going around 4:30 and hand dry outside during the summer it's usually dry in time for me to stuff before I go to bed at 10.  Otherwise I stuff in the morning.

We do spray the poopy diaps after DC on nights we don't wash.  But that's more just because it bothers me to have them sitting there (we spray our poopies from home diapers right away).  I just spray and put them back in the wetbag which I leave sitting in the laundry sink until we wash.

  • I make sure he has 4 CDs at daycare and 1 disposible for just in case (DS is 19m). I also have 1 medium wet bag that they put dirties in, it hangs near the changing table. Just like PP, they bag poopy diapers before putting them in the wet bag, and they'll plop if possible. I rinse the pul of my wetbag at night so it doesn't smell funky the next day, and throw it in with the diapers on Tuesdays and Saturdays. I probably have about 30 diapers in my stash total, and they're all pockets.
  • Daycare keeps the backup diaper in his cubby, so I just send what he usually uses for the day (we're down to 2 or 3 changes, as he goes a while dry now that he's 2). I wash in the evening after work and would just hang on racks indoors (rather than sunning - that only happens on weekends). I have a cloth grocery bag that goes back and forth every day with his diapers, wet bag, and a few other odds and ends.
  • I bring five clean ones a day stuffed into the wet bag and unload them in dd's cubby. I don't use our regular diaper bag because everything else is already there- her wipes, cream, diaper wipe spray. We have enough extra for a whole day in case we ever forget to bring a new batch. Usually they change her 4 times. We wash every third day. I like having a lot so we wash because we have enough dirty for a load, not because we ran out of clean ones. I only send pockets to day care but at home use pockets or prefolds and covers.

How do you do it with daycare? I still wash with my regular routine of every 2-3rd day. Whatever diapers she uses at daycare she would have used here so it changes nothing.
How many diapers would you typically send? I used to send 8 diapers, but now that she's over a year her diaper use has cut back with her growth and she only goes through max 4 a day so I usually send 5.
Do you also send disposables in case of an emergency or would that even be necessary? It has never been necessary, so no.
What do you send them in? MIL brought back this cute canvas bag from her trip to Australia. It's about 2/3 the size of a reusable shopping bag and has a zipper on top. Perfect size and I don't have to send her full diaper bag.
What size wetbag do you send? Just the small size. I used to send 2 when she used more in a day, but 1 is enough now.
If you rinse them out when you get home, and are the diapers okay to be soiled for that long and then rinsed later on? Absolutely. There has been no ill effect, and it actually makes spraying off poop really easy because it dries out a bit as the insert pulls the moisture out of the poop and it almost plops right off.
If you air dry, how are they ready by the next day, or is that why a three day supply would be necessary? I have a 4 day supply so I wash the night of the second day, let them hang to dry (or tumble depending on weather) on the 3rd morning, stuff the 3rd night and they are ready to go the 4th day with diapers to spare.

  • I send 5 diapers to DC per day; most days they use 4.

I do have disposables there in case they are needed.

We use disposables over night, so typically I wash our diapers every 2-3 days.

I knock off the solids or rinse dirty dipes and then just throw them all into a large pail bag.  I made my own wetbags for DC as I had to supply a small trash can and needed them to fit a certain way.
