gas drops?

Gas drops - anyone familiar with these or ST+Ms have experience with them?  I've seen them on several "must have' lists for baby but personally haven't ever seen them or heard of them (FTM here, though..)

Are they worth getting to have on hand? brand recommendations if so?  Trying to stock up on necessities! ;)

TIA!

Re: gas drops?

  • This #3 and I have yet to use anything like that. I would wait, it seems like one of those things if you need it then you get it.

  • We used gas drops a lot the first few months. We bought whatever brand was the best deal.

We used gripe water too. But you can only use that like 4 times a day and it can cause constipation. DS got constipated on it a couple times. Not after a dose or two though. It was after a few. So we used it sparingly. Again we bought whatever brand was the best deal.

  • And gripe water is more for upset tummies than gas though it does help with gas. Just not as well as the gas drops.

  • Gripe water never worked for my girls but Mylicon was a lifesaver! I had to use it at every feeding for it to work though.

  • I have heard gripe water is the best. I was also told the drops can sometimes cause constipation. Guess it depends on the baby though :)

  • My son had a hard time burping on his own or even being patted so we used gas drops and they helped a lot. But the gripe water didnt help him and he didnt like the taste of it.

We used Mylicon religiously for my first who was primarily formula fed but didnt use it much with my second who I breastfed for three months. I attribute the gasiness to the formula mostly. I bought some to have on hand this time even though I will be breast feeding, this is not something I want to realize I need and don't have, just like Tylenol, the nose sucker thing, and anything else as it relates to the baby being sick or uncomfortable. Edited for fat ogre finger typing on the ipad...

  • Gas drops are overused. I know some babies have issues, but many do not burp often enough, or try different approaches to burping the baby and then rely on the gas drops. Last few friends who had kids had gassy kids. used gas drops all the time, then got mad at the Pedi for telling them they were over using them. I tried to show them techniques (different ways to burp and massaging baby belly) but they were "to tired" for that.

I am not saying it is the case 100% of the time, but quite often it can be avoided. Talk to your Pedi about it.

That being said, even with my gassy child, we never used them with any of the kids.

  • Our pedi told us to use mylicon. Mylicon is mostly a surfactant in the stomach, and not digested. It released the surface tension and let the gases pass through.  She was very old school and very non-interventionist, but definetly cared more about LO being comfortable and healthy than what was "standard practice".  We're pretty low on the medicine use spectrum, but mylicon is going in our cabinet for the new baby too!
