Food Allergy

Egg Allergy just found out

My daughter is 1 and just was tested for allergies (blood tests) and she has an egg allergy. It's a holiday weekend so I can't talk to her doctor. Her levels were 4.29 H kU/L and normal is like 0.34. I don't even know what this means or how severe it is. We suspected egg allergy bc she gets a contact rash from eggs and from her smash cake on her birthday. Everything has eggs in it! Any help or advice or if anyone can explain to me how severe it is and if I need to avoid everything including pastas etc with eggs in it, any advice is helpful until I can speak with her doctor Tuesday!

Re: Egg Allergy just found out

  • Avoid everything until you talk to the allergist. My girls are both allergic to eggs, but can tolerate them as an ingredient in store bought bread, for example. If your LO has tolerated items like that, you'll probably be able to continue feeding her those things. But that's something to discuss with the allergist.

You'll also want to find out the correct dose of Children's Benadryl for her weight and ask if she should be prescribed an EpiPen Jr.

For baking at home, you can replace one egg with 1/4 cup applesauce. I bake egg-free at home and applesauce works great and doesn't change the flavor or anything.

  • My daughter also has an egg allergy. Her level was around 20something, which is considered in the very high range.
We carry Benadryl everywhere we go and she also takes daily Zyrtec (this is more for her dog/cat allergy).
Things to avoid that I didn't think of at first: ranch dressing, mayonnaise, pasta salads (anything made with mayo), some pastas, a lot of gluten free products have eggs in them (she also has a milder wheat allergy).
All packaged foods must have an allergy warning so be sure to check labels.
We use an egg replacer that I buy at a local health food store in cooking and baking. It's called Ener-G. You can also google all kinds of things you can use to replace eggs.
It's overwhelming at first, but you'll get used to it and it won't be so stressful after a while.

  • Thanks Ladies. I'd love some recipes for pancakes!
  • I find the egg allergy is harder to eat out with as opposed to the peanut allergy. However so many things can be adapted in the house. We were told to avoid everything with egg in it, even baked in items.

  • We are finding that eating out is the biggest challenge too, now that our little guy is eating actual food.  But all restaurants have allergy menus that you can ask for and they are really great about bringing it to you and giving you time to look over it to be safe.  Doing this, we have been able to find something almost everywhere we have gone.

At home it's a lot easier.  I found flax meal works really well as an egg replacer for cakes.  (lots of experiments for the upcoming first birthday party!)  It's 1 tbsp of flax meal to 3 tbsp of water for each egg.  If you beat it really well and then leave it for about 5 minutes, it's the exact consistency of eggs.  I used a box cake mix and flax meal and it worked like a charm!

There's an app in the Android store called Food Guard that I love.  Sometimes eggs can be hidden - called several other names - and this app catches those.  You scan bar codes to see if it's safe.  It has not been wrong yet.  ;)
