Birthday party menu

I'm planning DS's birthday party to be completely dairy free. It's for several reasons. I don't feel like worrying about everyone who wants to touch him or hold him, for starters. Also, it's tiring always having to be hyper vigilant at everyone else's parties. I thought this would be a nice break. I'm planning to make pasta, a big salad, meatballs ( well, I found some frozen ones) and maybe some chicken salad. I found a bakery that can do the cake ( they specialize in allergies) and we'll probably have a variety of "ice cream".
My mom is giving me sort of a hard time but I feel like if people don't like it, I don't really care!
Any thoughts? I personally don't think it's a big deal!

  • Do what works for you and DS! Who cares what everyone else thinks
  • We did egg/peanut/sesame free for our birthday.

It was hard but it made it so much easier not to have to be super vigilant with who was eating what and when.

  • I think your menu sounds great! You should be able to relax at your DS's party and not worry that he'll be exposed to dairy.
  • Quite honestly, I don't think anyone else would even notice that all of your choices are dairy free.

  • I agree that people probably won't even notice, but given the birthday boy's allergy, it should be assumed the food in her home or at her party is safe for her to be around. Why is your mom having a hard time with this? Is it the dairy free ice cream? She's obviously never had So Delicious' vanilla ice cream with coconut milk. Yum!

She's just made a few comments like
"I think people will want cheese with their pasta or if they make a meatball sandwich."
    I think they'll survive!

  • DD is allergic to dairy and DS (twins) is allergic to peanuts. We did dairy and peanut free for their birthday party. Everyone knows about their allergies so I'm sure they assumed it would be dairy/peanut free.  I don't think anyone noticed the lack of dairy or missed it. We had a hot dog bar (it was a Mickey/Minnie theme), steak tips, popcorn, pasta salad, chips, chicken fingers (from a local place), chicken salad sandwiches, safe chocolate dipped oreos, safe chocolate dipped rice krispie treats, and cake.

  • No one at my son's party cared if it was allergen free (dairy, egg, peanut, tree nut). I don't think they noticed until I mentioned I made vegan cupcakes.

  • Update- it was fabulous!! Perfect day, the food was great, the cake was amazing and nobody even missed any dairy. I got a few questions about the ice cream- we went with soy because it was way cheaper & there were 50 people there.
The best part- for ONCE not having to be stressed out!
The most relaxed I've been at a party or event since we got the diagnosis.
