Abreva and acne

edited August 2013 in February 2014 Moms
I sometimes get deep cystic zits below the corners of my mouth. A coworker suggested abreva, cold sore cream, to dry them out and clear up faster. Well it's worked in the past, now I have 2 more popping up and my wedding is in 8 days.

Is abreva safe during pregnancy? What I found online said it had not been studied yet or assigned a safety class for pregnant women. Just wondering what any of your doctors have said?

Re: Abreva and acne

  • Abreva is an antiviral thats why it works on cold sores which is herpes. I probably would not use it unless you doctor gives the go ahead. Especially since things like salicylic acid is not safe. If you want an all natural remedy to try make a mask out of cinnamon and honey or a stronger more astringent version would be baking soda and fresh squeezed lemon juice then use tea tree oil to spot treat

  • I'm glad you asked this!  It's been a year/two since my last cold sore, but stress usually does it for me and we've got a huge project at work that's kicking off and sure to stress me to the moon!  I'm going to be sure to ask the doc I see at my appointment on Tuesday!

  • I have no idea about abreva. But if you try what lrj85 said, test on a small area first! I tried a cinnamon mask once and it turned my face RED for a whole day. Afterwards, I got on the Google machine and it seems quite a few people have bad skin reactions to cinnamon. I'm not allergic, I eat a lot of it it just didn't jive with my skin!

I can just see disaster if you were to try that like the day before your wedding.

Did you use pure cinimon in the right concentration? its best to use non irradiated or freshly ground and its a bit of Cinnamon to honey ratio coupled with witchhazle I havent heard of reactions like that
  • Thanks. I asked a few rea world friends who recommended tea tree oil or toothpaste. And when I mentioned the pimples to my doc she prescribed Clindamycin gel
