flu shot??

I just got an email at work about free flu shots this year and it got me thinking about our babies this fall. My understanding is children under 6 months can't get the vaccine. That puts us at November before we would be eligible. Do we skip it this year and hope for the best or is November too late to get the vaccine? I usually get mine in October but I don't remember the range for when it's best.

Re: flu shot??

  • My pediatrician said for all family members to get it in sept and that LO will get it in nov

  • At our 4 month apt the doc said he would get one at his six month apt..regardless of when that is and that everyone around him should have a flu shot.
  • November is NOT too late!  Kids were still getting them last March.
  • Our DD will get the flu shot at her 6 month check-up as well.  Definitely not too late.  DH got the flu last year which then turned into pneumonia.  It was awful for a 30-year old.  I can't imagine an infant getting it.

DH and I are getting our flu shots this weekend.  Flu season seems to be starting earlier and end later these days.  DH has already see people with flu-like symptoms come to the pharmacy.

  • OK follow up then - WWYD if step-son's bio mom refused to get him the flu shot b/c she doesn't believe in it (he's 8)?? We battled this last year when I was pregnant and she refused. Fortunately none of us got sick.

  • If you're breastfeeding your immunities you'll develop to the shot will pass through your BM and protect LO until he can get his shot.

  • My 7 year old got the flu last year even though he got a flu shot. The ped said that it makes the flu less severe if you had the vaccine. He has a delicate immune system. Even with the vaccine, he was the sickest he's ever been (and he gets sick a LOT). His temp was 103+'and he missed 10 days of school. Nobody else in the family got it (thank goodness--everyone was vaccinated) and I don't even want to think how bad it could be w/o a vaccine.

This year everyone will get vaccinated as usual. C will get his at 6 mos... To prevent him from getting sick but also to keep my middle son from getting sick. He gets everything.
