C diff?!?

My LO is 4 months and was tested for a stool culture & C diff at a GI appt. We were there because my son has been having problems with blood in his stool. The c diff came back +. The GI doctor thinks that it is just a C diff flareup, because he has not been on antibiotics and has not been hospitalized. We originally thought it was a milk protein allergy but my son has no other symptoms, no rash or fussiness. He is EBF. Our GI doctor decided to treat the him with Flagyl because of his symptoms. He has been having smelly poop and what looks to be diarrhea but no other symptoms and he is not fussy. I too did not know that infants are carriers of C diff because of their immature gut.

I was just trying to see if anyone else has had a similar experience.

Re: C diff?!?

  • No baby experience with this, but make sure that you (and anyone else who takes care of LO) are washing hands *thoroughly* after diaper changes (soap and water, through at least two rounds of singing twinkle twinkle in your head - not hand sanitizer).  I work in a hospital and having c diff as an adult is miserable.  I hope he gets better soon and keeps that little bug to himself!

  • C diff is part of the normal flora of your gut. It's a problem when there is an overgrowth, typically because of long term or strong antibiotics. I hope your lo is feeling better soon. Did you ask about using a probiotic for baby? It wouldn't hurt for you to take one either. Like pp said, wash your hands VERY well. All of your lo's laundry should be washed seperatly from anyone else's and in hot water. If any poop gets on anything, clean it with a bleach solution. Again, as pp stated, c-diff as an adult is horrible! (I am an RN and have taken care of lots of c-diff patients)
