Random question: Maternity photo session

Is anyone or has anyone done a maternity photo session?! If you have done it before was it worth it and how far along were you when you did it? Or if you are planning to do a photo session how far along will you be when you do it?! Just wondering I keep going back and forth if we should do it or not! Thanks!

Re: Random question: Maternity photo session

  • my friend who is a photographer and has offered to do them for me at around 27 weeks,  I never had any done with my 1st, but I want to this time.

  • My DH who is a photographer took some of me last time. He's going to trade sessions with someone this time around. He recommends getting them done between 28 and 32 weeks.
  • I got mine at 34 weeks and I really treasure those pictures.

  • When u was 7 weeks pregnant did a boudoir shoot for my hubby. I had just lost 30 lbs and felt great and there wasn't a bump yet. But the shoot made me feel great! I'm considering doing it at least with our first. But we'll see. I think it's a great idea to capture the moment forever. But don't do boudoir / maternity photos. I saw Photos of someone who did that ( I think by accident she was trying to look sexy) and they were so bad. Just a little strange with the pouty lip come hither face with a huge belly. We're already going to be sexy at 7 months - no pouty faces! Just revel in the amazing-ness that is pregnancy and hubbies / everyone will love it!
  • I always recommend my clients to do them between 30-35 weeks. You want your belly nice and round but also don't want to be so uncomfortable it's miserable! I am due in March and I am so looking forward to some winter maternity photos!
  • I think Im going to wait until Im at lease 25/26 weeks
  • I didn't have one done last time, but a photographer is offering it for free with a birth package. She said she prefers to do them around 7 months or so.

  • With my first I did two, one at 33 and the other at 38 weeks. I'm a photographer and arranged trades with photographer friends :)  For my second, I just did one at 38 weeks, I wanted to do it a bit earlier, but that's just how the scheduling worked out!

For my clients, I try and schedule them between 33-36 weeks, depending.  Everyone shows a little differently, but I find that time frame is usually good enough to have a nice belly but not be huge and uncomfortable during the shoot.

  • I did mine at 34wks and love them.  We just did a "couples" photo session where I happened to be pregnant. Our wedding photog did them and I love that they capture our happiness about growing our family the same way our engagement and wedding photos captured our happiness about getting married. We're going to do a family session in late Oct and I won't be as pregnant, but I'll have a good bump and we'll consider those our maternity pictures this time around.

  • I tell my clients that around 30 weeks is usually the perfect time. For March mamas I think a Christmas/Winter session would be awesome!

If you're debating about it, I say do it. Better to have the photos and not display them, than wish you had them. I'm having my sister take a few, but not doing a whole session. I will edit them myself. If you're not wanting to invest a lot of money, see if there is a local photography student who would be interested in doing them for cheap.

If you're planning on having newborn photos done, a lot of photographers do a free maternity session with deposit for newborn shots or a combo package for a discount. :-)

I've def thought of a winter theme for ours! I am debating whether to use our wedding photographers - I looked at their maternity portfolio online and its not impressive. Not like their wedding portfolio. Thing is, I will feel bad using someone else because they follow our blog and they know we're prego! Guess I'll have to just tell them exactly why I want and see if they can do it. We will prob try to do in Jan.
  • I had them taken with my first pregnancy. I liked that I was able to capture the moment with pictures. I also got newborn, 3 month, 6 month, 9 month and 12 month pictures done. I liked them but we didn't like spending that much money on them.

We are going to do the pictures ourselves this pregnancy. We have a good camera and my SIL will take them and edit them for us (she's not a photographer but likes it as a hobby). I know they won't come out as good as the professional pictures but that's okay with us.

I am very excited about a winter theme and am already picking out outfits and places for the pictures.

  • We did and I absolutely love those pictures. It was so worth the money spent. We did it at 38 wks and only because it put us right in fall and did it at Princeton University. This time I will def. be doing it soon so I don't look like a blimp and feel like a blimp. This time I plan on late 20's early 30's.
