Dads & Dads-to-be

5 Thing Thursday

1) Dad update:  How old are your kids/how far along is your wife?  With all the new dads joining, it allows everyone to know where we all are in dad-hood.

2) Baseball is gearing up for the final run into the playoffs, college football kicks off tonight and the NFL kicks off a week from tonight... which, if any, are you most looking forward to?  Guesses for champions in each?

3-5 is up to you... fill us in on anything going on in your world baby related or not.

  • 1) Dad update:  How old are your kids/how far along is your wife?  With all the new dads joining, it allows everyone to know where we all are in dad-hood.

I have two sons, my oldest (J) is 2 2/3 years old, my youngest (A) just turned 6 months a week ago.  Not currently preggo and don't plan to be for at least a year and change more.

    2) Baseball is gearing up for the final run into the playoffs, college football kicks off tonight and the NFL kicks off a week from tonight... which, if any, are you most looking forward to?  Guesses for champions in each?

Most excited for the NFL.  Baseball was over a while ago for me (Cub fan, not that I was expecting a great deal from them this year).  My guesses for champions currently are the Tigers in baseball, Broncos vs. Seahawks in the Super Bowl and a very boring college football selection of Alabama.

    3) Just got back from A's 6 month appointment, he's 27 3/4 inches long, 17 lbs 7.5 oz.  According to the %s, he's tall and relatively skinny.  He's got chunky legs though.

    4) It is amazing to see how much of a bond my boys have already.  J always wants to know where A is, wants to sit by him all the time, gives him lots of hugs.  A always gets the biggest smile on his face when J is in sight.  It is just cool that at such a young age that they are already bonded so much.

    5) I'm really looking forward to fantasy football this year, namely our board league.  Interested to see how much smack will be flying on the board...probably not too much coming from me though.

My guesses for champions currently are the Tigers in baseball,

  • 1.  My wife is 38 weeks and 2 days now.  The baby is still sitting breech and her fluid levels are hovering around the 4.5 - 6 range.  Our doctor is still recommending a scheduled c-section but since the baby has not been under any stress (according to the NST's), we are basically taking it day to day and hoping that he flips.  One way or another, we are having this baby within 2 weeks.

    2.  I should be really excited for the baseball playoffs but I'm not.  The Tigers have been sooooo frustrating this season, even though they've led the division all year.  They just dropped three straight games and I'm hoping that they don't underachieve again in the postseason.  I'm not the biggest football fan so playing the fantasy thing will hopefully keep my attention longer than the games do.

    3.  Six Flags near Chicago just announced they are building the world's tallest, fastest, and steepest wooden coaster for 2014.  Kings Island near Cincinnati announced the world's longest inverted coaster.  Since we have relatives near both parks, my wife and I plan on making up on lost time this year.

    4.  I've been running a lot lately using a new iPhone app called Zombies, Run!  The app plays your songs in between an ongoing story of you running for supplies in a zombie outbreak.  It's interval training so sometimes you have to run faster to escape a zombie attack.  Once you're done, you use the supplies you collected to build up your base.  It's awesome when the announcer tells me to run due to a zombie attack and the app plays "Creeping Death" by Metallica.

    5.  I don't want to be at work today.

Yeah, the addition of the Banshee may very well lead me to actually going to Kings' Island for the first time in years.  Last time I was there Firehawk just opened and Son of Beast was having the loop removed.  Now, Banshee stands where Son of Beast was, and with that and Diamondback, I may just have to go back.  I'm liking Cedar Fair (company that owns Cedar Point) taking ownership of Kings Island since it is so much closer than Cedar Point.

Little guy just passed 3 months old.

Right now I'm in full on baseball mode.  That will continue until the Reds are knocked out.  Early season college football is boring this year.  No marquee matchups for Ohio State or Cincinnati early on so I'll join in full steam after baseball.  I'm going to stick with homer picks for champions.  Reds and Buckeyes.  NFL I have no clue, but I can tell you it won't be the Browns.

    3) It appears our little man is starting to teeth.  This should be a fun time.

    4) My next graduate class started this week.  My wife is not excited about my time being sucked up again.  She enjoyed having my attention for the last couple weeks.

    5) First couple games in the Reds-Cardinals series were rough for a Reds fan.  Last night was a nice cleanser.

I've heard good things about Zombies, Run!  Might be something I check out eventually to break up the monotony.

    I agree wholeheartedly with #5.

I've never been a big fan of running but the app definitely breaks up the monotony.  Turning it into a game and utilizing your playlists keeps it interesting and I find that I'm actually looking forward to waking up early to run now.

  • 1) Dad update:  How old are your kids/how far along is your wife?

One daughter, nearly 5mos old. Talking about having another, but that's more than a year away at least.

    2) MLB, NCAA, NFL...

NFL. I don't expect any miracles out of Tampa, but I'd like to see steady improvement. As for potential champs, is it just me or does the current field seem more balanced than in years past? Or maybe the phrase I'm looking for is "less dynamic." Maybe it's just me. Dunno. I could see the Seahawks in there I suppose, but I'm garbage at long-term picks anyway.

3- My motorcycle. Ah, my motorcycle. What do to, what to do. In my heart of hearts I think I know that she's ultimately going to wear a "for sale" sign, but it's not an easy relationship to end. Still, where the nameplate on the tank reads "Harley Davidson," I keep seeing "college fund." But with the two-door GTi already forfeited in favor of a four-door mini SUV thing, this is a tough loss. Maybe I'll wait a little longer before deciding...

4- Chest-thumping boast alert: My wife had a miserable pregnancy, lots of discomfort and fatigue, so over a nine-month period I turned into one hell of a cook. Made a pan-roasted chicken with cremini mushrooms in a red wine/balsamic vinegar reduction the other night — ridiculous. Stayed up til 2 this morning tending to a multi-hour lamb curry with roasted tomatoes, fennel and heirloom carrots, which should be perfect to eat this evening. Used to do a mustard-and-herb crusted salmon that started in a cast-iron skillet and finished in the oven, but...

5- In the wake of her pregnancy, my wife has suddenly developed an allergy to mustard. Apparently it's quite normal for women to develop allergies after giving birth. What an annoying and frustrating issue. I feel awful for her as she's quite a foodie and this cuts out more than you'd think — many sausages, salad dressings, meat sauces, relishes, etc etc etc.   Has anything like this happened to anyone else's wife/partner?

    3. I have realized that I have spent over about $3,500 at gamestop the video game store and it doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. I have enough points to buy 2 more games for next to free.
Your daughter is awake 75% of the day and you still have time to play video games?  You are a machine.

  • 1) My son turns 3 in a few weeks. He is very excited about his birthday this year.

    2) Go Braves! Please stay healthy

I have the Braves over Tigers in 7.
    (Sorry Futant)

Broncos over the Falcons in the Superbowl. Denver has a sick team and a great D.

NCAA is a crapshoot. But I would put money on a SEC team winning again.

    3) I'm so hungry. I want the biggest and nastiest Steak n Cheese right now or like 3 Five Guy's hotdogs.

    4) I find out if I win a grill from the radio today. I just had to stump the DJ with a general knowledge question to go into a drawing. I believe I have like a 1 and 5 chance.

    5) Life is great.

Wifey is 6 weeks preggo with our first child (hoping for our son Salem, but don't care about the sex as long as we have a healthy baby).

    2) Baseball is gearing up for the final run into the playoffs, college football kicks off tonight and the NFL kicks off a week from tonight... which, if any, are you most looking forward to?  Guesses for champions in each?

Meh, funniest thing about my marriage is that wifey is the one into sports and I'm just like...I'm gonna go play my guitar or something.  Not into sports at all, never have been really; but you get my wife in front of the T.V. watching football, you can hear her cursing clear across the neighborhood.

    3) Have been blowing up the forums here with general common sense questions that, in hindsight, make me feel kind of dumb.  Oh well, we live and learn.  I'd much rather be informed by many who have had experience with all of this than sit in the dark obsessing over normalcy, etc.  So, if my questions seem dumb..oh well :P

    4) I've been losing a lot of sleep lately (not by my own accord).  I guess my body is like "haha dude, get used to it!" in prep for our little monster.  So I've spent most of my time haunting pinterest and the forums here looking at stuff, reading stories, getting ideas.  My wife looks at me weird when we sit down together and I show her this huge pile of stuff that I found while she was sleeping.  She's calling me superdad already (I think I'm just being thorough lol)

    5) I found a really good health insurance that is based on income here in NC which makes me feel a hell of a lot better when it comes to check ups and stuff after the baby gets here.  Even though the budget I'm making allows (hopefully) for extra expense, it's nice to have that peace of mind that your child will have good health insurance.

We've all been there. Don't worry about it. We are here to help each other out.

They film the Walking Dead near where I live. I've been to "Woodbury" (it's actually downtown Senioa) several times.

I hope to one day take the zombie tour.

  • 1) My son is 16 months or so.
    2) I am irrationally excited about NFL football. I'm convinced that the Vikings might actually be good with AP on the field. They've been terrible in the preseason, but they have smartly not really played AP
    3) My son can give me high fives on demand. It's all I ever dreamed of in life, to have a person who will high five me whenever I want it.
    4) I really need to make an ESPN account that isn't my real first/last name and join the FF league. I'm lazy.
    5) I was supposed to quit Sugar soda. It's not going well. But I'm getting closer to being able to run a full 5K again.

  • 1) I have a 27 month old son.  We had a miscarriage right before Thanksgiving last year.  MW is getting her gall bladder out so we will wait until later this year to try again.  She is getting fustrated that it is taking so long to have a second child but she keeps learning of other road blocks to this end goal.

    2) I can't wait to watch my Ohio State, Penn State, and Wisconsin games.  I upgraded my Dish programming so I now get the Big Ten network.  I also will try to watch Pittsburgh play some but I usually end up with the Clowns instead.  Better then the Bungles (yes I did live in Columbus Ohio for a decade so I picked up their lingo for the two semi-pro teams in Ohio).

    3) We are going to try to potty train our son this weekend using the three day program.  He sometimes asks us currently and we have some success with him going to the bathroom with help.

    4) Once we get a big bed for my son, we will change how we put him to sleep because I am getting tired of being the first one to go to bed every night and have almost no alone time with my wife.

    5) Next Friday I get to do my first sleep study to see if I have sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome or what that keeps waking me up at 3pm.

  • My son always could sleep through most of the night even when he was like 3 months old.  What helped us is that we would feed him as much milk as he wanted at bed time so he would sleep until he was hungry again.  We also never purposely woke him up in the middle of the night to feed him on suggestion from my mom and others.
