Wanting more time with my kids!

I am a single mom and it absolutely kills me to have to leave my kids with a babysitter while I go to work.  I work in retail so the hours are all over the place.  My son started Kindergarten last year, and I feel like I missed a lot.  Any tips from parents with school age children?  Does anyone work from home?  Or wish they could?
