Starting Solids

I know this is a very controversial subject so please don't reem me.  So my pedi gave me the ok to start solids about 1.5 weeks ago @ LO's 4 month visit. LO gets EBF now every 3 hours. A is whooping 15 pounds.  I always thought I would start at 6 months but A seems to want them now...he opens his mouth and lunges toward the spoon.  I started with rice cereal but he wasn't a fan so I moved on to oatmeal which he seems ok with.  I plan on and have started freezing some organic homemade purees for when I decide to move him on again.  I was thinking of starting with avocado and then moving on to some orange veggies.  I don't really want to start fruits until later on because I know LO will love them and hate my veggie purees lol. My question is:  When did you start solids, and what food (besides cereals) did you give LO first?

DS was right between 4 and 5 months when we started solids.  The Dr gave us the go ahead and said that it didn't necessarily need to be cereal.  His first food was avocado.  I did add in some oatmeal when he started fruit though.  But he actually never had rice cereal.

  • We started solids when M was 4m1w. we skipped cereal altogether, and did pureed veggies and fork-mashed fruits (banana, pears).  Honestly, back then, DS would eat anything I spoon-fed him (be it veggies or fruits).  Now he's self-feeding and that's a totally different story...

  • Well I would say do what you feel is best. We started at 5.5 months and  I started with rice cereal, then moved to oatmeal, then sweet potatoes, green beens, peas, squash & Carrott purrees. I stayed away from fruits as long as I could because I was also afraid he would only love that but he loved his veggies. I started adding fruit to his oatmeal after a while or if he didn't like peas - I would add a touch of applesauce. He always liked it. I stayed away from tomatoe sauce, mandarine oranges, and banans & pears in the begining because he broke out in hives from them. But months later I could give them to him and he was perfectly fine. Good luck! Take lots of pics! I love seeing little ones try new foods.

  • We started with Oatmeal at 6 mos, but discovered that DS1 is truly allergic to oats and switched to rice cereal. I did orange veggie purees first, but my pedi actually wanted me to do meats first because of recent literature on iron levels in BF babies at 6 mos (I started weaning at that time, so it didn't really apply to us and puréed meats are vile!). They LOVED squash, sweet potatoes, peas and green beans. They actually didn't like fruits in the beginning, but will eat them as long as they are chunks (they never liked fruit purees or mashed fruit and HATED bananas). They will always pick veggies over fruit and DS2 acts like broccoli is candy.

Around eight months, I started doing chunks and they now get all veggies in diced, steamed chunks. They also get fruit the same way and especially like apricots, pears, and peaches. They LOVE cinnamon applesauce. Around 9/10 months, I started doing pasta, cheese, yogurt, toast, and pieces of meat. Now, i give them table food and they seem to do well with it. They aren't giant fans of bananas or avocados, but everything else seems okay.

We started once we got back from vacay away so at about 4.5 months. It got really tough to not feed him in the week or two before that as he was literally lunging for my food. We did rice, oat, barley in that order for a week each moving from 1 to 2 feeds a day. Now we are adding in veggies and so far have done zucchini, avocado, and green beans. We now do 3 feeds a day. Morning is cereal. Lunch is veggie. And dinner is both. My plan is to hold off on fruits and meats for a while. I am not being strict about it, but just waiting until it feels right to me. I think I will do sweet potato next.

Also, we did zucchini first because we had some fresh in our garden. Green beans are from there too and once the carrots are ready he'll get those.
  • Pretty much what PP's have said! Start when you and LO are ready, despite what others think. We started at 5 months very sporadically. DS first food was bananas. We never did rice cereal. I just wasn't into it. If LO is totally into it then I say go for it!!! Have fun, this is a fun transition. It's funny to see their reaction to the taste of "real" food.

@ racheyt0227: Can you give me a little info around the meats?  I just can't imagine giving them to LO, but my mom says this is normal.  Just, introduce it the same as you would everything else?  And out of curiousity - are they completely nasty?  Have you tasted them?
I have not tried them! I have tried his fruits/veggies though, not sure why not the meat. So I do jar stuff (organic for most of it) so, I can't saw the process to actually do it yourself.

Anyways, the texture is a bit different & C really isnt a fan of it now, so for the time being, I just mix it into his evening cereal & he takes it easily.

  • At 5 months, we started him on rice cereal then oatmeal, although next time I will skip the rice cereal. Over the next few months we introduced many purees: apples, bananas, peaches, peas, plums, sweet potatoes, carrots, pears, spinach, blueberries, raspberries, spring veggie mix with brown rice, chicken, turkey. By six months I was giving him table foods (BLW): avocado, zucchini, bananas, lemons, carrots, mashed potatoes, chicken and salmon. Plus veggie & fruit puffs for snacks. By 7/8 months, he was eating pretty much everything we were eating.
