Milk (POLL)

edited August 2013 in July 2012 Moms

So K is the only one of 5 babies he goes to daycare with that still gets milk. Should I not be giving him milk anymore? My pedi said to transition to WCM at 12 months, and we did, but why are these other babies not drinking milk during the day?

Tell me, how often (if at all) milk does your LO drink during the day?

ETA: All babies in K's daycare class were born between June and August 2012

  • Montessori only gives water during the day and I nurse at home. No dairy for him. He's still intolerant

  • I voted ss because we have no milk schedule. He gets a bottle in the morning and evening of wcm about 6-8 oz. Sometimes he get's milk during the day if he ask for it. Otherwise he gets water or juice. Like today he had milk with lunch for no other reason than that's what I gave him.

  • We're not even off formula yet.  We do WCM for the 1st and last bottle of the day; everything in the middle is formula.

  • Also just a heads up, more than 24oz of milk in a day can cause anemia. The mineral composition is the reason

@meow84 I haven't really thought of it until lately since his classmates don't get any (at least not while they are at daycare). I know @stokedwifey said her pedi told her to go to just water for B, and ever since learning about K's classmates I'm all scared I'm doing something wrong.

It looks like most of y'all still do WCM at least 3 times a day, so that makes me feel a little better. But it's still weird that I'm the only mom that sends a sippy of milk at K's daycare....

I always wondered why there was a limit. Thanks! I really don't count ounces that much, but I think we are usually right around 16-20 ounces WCM a day and maybe 4-6 ounces of water.

I answered SS, but then realized my choice was there. Oops. I nurse Cam in the morning, then he gets 5 oz of WCM at 10:30, 3:30, and right before bed at about 7:00. I think he gets next to nothing when he nurses in the morning though. I'm really drying up.
This is almost our exact schedule, only I'm no longer nursing. K gets about 5 oz when he wakes up, 4 oz at 11ish, 4oz at 3ish, and then 5oz before his bath at 7ish.

  • LO still gets milk 5X a day.  I asked the pedi about cutting back to 3X a day or only with meals.  The pedi told me not to cut out any milk and to offer between meals. LO is small (like 8% in weight) so she said LO needs all the calories she can get.
  • Joe is still on formula 2x a day.  No milk yet as suggested by my pedi to wait until 15m appointment.  Although, he is a eating machine and I feel as if he gets enough with what he eats and may start WCM.  He drinks water throughout the day as well.

  • Well, you know my answer.  The only reason B doesn't get milk is because he gets the other 3 servings of dairy elsewhere.  Most of B's classmates get milk still and some are as old as 17 months.

We'll stop WCM at 2 years, then switch to a lower fat version.  The fats in WCM are good for brain development.

  • Mira still gets 3 breastmilk bottles during the day. And she needs to be held or she doesn't finish them.

  • I don't know how much she drinks in ounces but I offer milk with every meal and at bedtime. She occasionally goes to the fridge and wants it other times and I will give it to her then. I find it odd that your LO is the only one drinking milk at daycare.

  • I *think* E gets milk at every meal.  No clue actually what they give her at daycare.

I think at some point you are supposed to switch to 2% since they no longer need the fat & calories of whole milk. But I'm not sure what age that is.

  • DS still nurses all day, so we don't give him milk at meals, just water. The past few days, if I think about it, I'll give him a cup of almond milk (which is what I drink) at lunch.

    @britbratjf My pedi said 2% at 2.

  • I think it depends a lot on what other sources of dairy he is getting. Here is a good link that shows some recommendations for how many calories from each food group your baby needs based on how tall he is.

We do milk at all three meals and sometimes at snacks depending on what other dairy she gets

    https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/toddler/nutrition/Pages/Serving-Sizes-for-Toddlers.aspx

My pedi said the general recommendation is 12 to 16 oz. I plan to continue with whole milk until age 2.

You have no clue what they are giving her? So, they could be giving her a jack and coke?  This is weird to me no offense.

  • Wow, unless a Dr. specifically advises it I would guess NO milk is not a good thing.  It is definitely still recommended.  Even my 3 year old still needs a good amount of dairy.  Lily is also the kid who will chug milk at meals and then be full so she gets her 3 cups of WCM right after she wakes in the morning, after a late morning nap, and after her late afternoon nap.
