Opposite blood types

So I've always known I'm O negative . I just got the results back from my husbands blood work and come to find out he's O positive (talk about opposites attract :p ) this is our first child, so what does this mean for me? I have my next appt next Wednesday but I'm just curious if there are people out there that have had to deal with opposite blood types

Re: Opposite blood types

  • I am A- an my DH is A+ so I had to get a rhogam shot. I had to get it early because I have an SCH, I think most people get it in the 3rd tri.

Me: Endo, PCOS, septated uterus (mostly removed)

    DH: perfect

  • Cool thanks for all the quick replys :)
  • You have no worries. I'm O- too and my doc said I will get the rhogam shot at 28 weeks and then again after birth if the baby isn't also a negative blood type. She said the during birth is when there is the highest chance of you and babies blood mixing which can cause problems for you. She did tell me however that if I spot at all to call right away because that could mean that something has happened causing our bloods to mix and I would need to get the shot right away. Hope that helps.

Pretty much the same for me.   I am A- and they assumed my DH is +, so when I had bleeding and an SCH in the first trimester, they gave me rhogam at 8 weeks to prevent my body from making antibodies.

I'm not sure if being RH negative impacts O- blood types the same way, but since they are having your hubby blood typed, I'd assume it's the same.  If you have any spotting or bleeding, I'd let your doctor know asap!
  • Dumb question ... but RH- means any negative blood type, right?

  • I have a negative blood type and DH is positive. I got my rho gam shots and it turned out that DS didn't need one because he actually has the same blood type that I do.
  • The 'o' doesn't matter that much, it's the negative that's an issue. I have the same issue and got rhogam last pregnancy. No big deal
