? For pumping working moms

I'm going back to work in a few weeks and will be pumping during the day. For other pumping/working moms, how frequently did you pump? Were you able to keep up your supply?

I pumped with my singleton and am having a hard time imagining pumping twice the amount. Is it possible?

Re: ? For pumping working moms

  • Yup! It is! I pump to/from work and twice during the work day (for 20-30 minutes). My schedule looks something like this (I EP, so it might be a little different):

    5:30 - Wake Up & pump
    7 AM - Car Pump
    10ish - Pump @ work
    2ish - Pump @ work
    5PM - Car Pump
8PM - Pump while feeding babies for bed
1AM - Wake up to pump (this is the part I hate the most! Ha!)
TTC Since 11/10 due to Unexplained IF
4 Rounds of Clomid, 2 Rounds of Femara + IUI, 2 rounds of IUI+ Injectables (Bravelle + Menopur) = First BFP! TWIN GIRLS!

  • Wasn't working this go around, but pumped every 3 hours during the day up until about 8 months when I started tapering off (got rid of my night pumps by 6 months :) Maintaining the supply was hard, it'll be easier if you are nursing at night. Drink toms of water and just keep an eye on it. Good luck!!

  • @Brummy14 - How do you pump in the car?
If you have a medella pump, they have a car plug that goes into your cigarette lighter. It's the best thing ever. I used mine all the time with my singleton. Sitting in traffic.. sure let me whip out my boobs and pump.. Sounds fun :)

I do have a medela pump. Interesting. How do you cover yourself up and not cause an accident?
    B-)

  • I love you for the car pump! I did that, and it was magical. :). I felt like I was getting away with something for being able to get a pumpin session out of the way while I was driving home from work.

If you have a nursing cover, you can try using it. I tried to use mine, but it was too much of a hassle so I don't cover up,I just hope I don't get stopped beside someone too nosey. Haha

  • I use a handsfree bra and a nursing cover. Works like a charm! :) most of my drive is interstate, anyway, so no stopped traffic to deal with nosey peeps. Hardest part is finding a discreet parking spot at work to de-tatch myself without flashing any co-workers, but so far has been a non-issue! :) Highly recommend trying it -- it is a HUGE time saver!

  • Superwomen you are!

  • This was our schedule:

    7am (wake up) nurse
8:30am pump on the way to work
    12pm pump
    3/4pm pump
    6/7pm pump
    10:30/11pm nurse (dream feed)

I used my Medela Symphony (bought the car adapter for it) and didn't see a drop in supply. And remember you won't pump as much as your babies will take by nursing - they're much more efficient.

  • Is it weird that I'm kinda excited to car pump when I go back to work?

  • I just returned to work.  I am completing my 2nd week being back and pumping.  So far, I am keeping up, and make a little more than is needed for the next day.  I nurse when I am with the babies.  Otherwise, I am pumping about every 2-3 hours, more on the 3 hours side of things.  The babies go down at 7pm, and I do a 9PM pump every night.  I too have pumped and drove when I knew that I was pressed for time this past week.  Best thing ever!!!
