So I sit here with cycle day 2 in full swing trying to be hopeful for this next clomid cycle. We have been ttc #2 for about 22 months now I'm labeled secondary infertility. I ovulate on my own and his swimmers are good:) We have had every test completed and checked off the list and we are great. So what is the problem!!! As I sit here wallowing in self pitty I'm looking for clomid success stories. Anything to keep me positive and focused:)

  • I'm sorry. Clomid didn't work for me. But it does for a lot of women. Undiagnosed IF is so rough. GL, hopefully you are one of those it works for.

I assume you are working with an RE?

  • In my case the re did all of the work up and tests then let me choose my next step. He is an IVF pusher. I told him I wasn't there yet and he said my ob could handle clomid as a starter.

  • I participated in a 5 cycle research study for PCOS and was given either Femara or Clomid (not sure which). I didn't have success during that study, even with the highest dose of whatever med they were giving me. I was also unsuccessful during a clomid/TI cycle and a clomid/ovidrel/IUI cycle.

However, my successful cycle was a complete surprise. I took Clomid and Metformin and was planning another trigger + IUI, but when I went in for monitoring I was told I didn't respond so we decided to cancel the cycle. I left on vacation on CD15, and obviously ovulated on vacation, where we were in a rental house with 3 other couples and only managed to have sex once. We call DD our miracle! I like the story because one of the other couples also got pregnant on that trip after having tried for a long time too, and their daughter is 5 days older than ours. :)

So yes, Clomid can work :)

Is your OB monitoring you on Clomid?  i.e. doing internal ultrasounds to look at your ovaries?

  • No luck on clomid here. Never helped me ovulate but that was my issue. If you are being closely monitored they should be able to tell if it's working and or if you should move onto stims or something else. Good luck!

On the positive I know two friends that got pregnant on clomid!

    Married: 5/09 ~ TTC Since: 10/10 ~ PCOS ~ Progesterone from 10/10 - 2/11 ~ HSG on 3/18 - Clear ~ Started Metformin 1000mg & Clomid 50mg 2/11 ~ Metformin upped to 1500mg 4/6 ~ 6/7 Now going to SG and put on Clomid, Ovidrel, Gonal F, Prometrium, Estrace ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP!!!!!! March 6th our little man was born.

6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

  • Sorry to hear you had a rough day!
I had a successful clomid cycle 100mg combined with ovidrel trigger shot and timed intercourse. However I was monitored by an RE to ensure I didn't overstimulate and produce too many eggs (even though I had 4 mature ones!). Also monitoring was important to see if I was responding and ensure there were no cysts. Good luck. I suggest being monitored since you only have a certain lifetime limit of clomid and also if you're not responding to it then why waste time? I'd ask for cd3 and 10 or 14 ultrasounds at the least.

  • I'm so sorry for what you have been through.

Being on clomid unmonitored is dangerous.  Like amd said, you can only take it a limited number of times in your life and you don't want to waste time on something that has no potential to work, which you won't know without monitoring.  You also don't want to end up ovulating 8 eggs, and all of them fertilizing.  I ended up having very severe side effects from clomid that put me in the hospital and out of work for week, and that was after having taken it for 2 previous cycles with no issues.  If the RE you went to is pushing IVF and you aren't prepared, I would recommend another RE who will do medicated TI cycles with monitoring, or medicated IUIs.  GL.

  • My sister was successful on her second Clomid cycle. Unfortunately, Clomid was not a good fit for me. I am one of the women who experiences a thin lining on Clomid, which would have never been discovered without ultrasounds. My OB was willing to have me take it for six cycles with nothing more than 7dpo blood work, but my RE insisted on ultrasounds and I'm so pleased he did. I never would have known about the side effect and would have continued taking it with no hope of success. Like PP noted, monitoring is also imperative for your safety and to reduce the risk of high order multiples. I had a cycle canceled for overstimulation and I can say it was no fun.

Best of luck to you with your future cycles and I'm so sorry to hear of the fire in your home. Many hugs your way.

  • I personally went through 3 years of untreated infertility before I went to an RE. The RE did all the hormone tests and semen analysis and it was all normal. They started me on clomid with an ultrasound on day 11 to measure follicles and lining. I responded pretty well with 2-4 follicles depending on the cycle and a thick lining. Then they had me do an ovidrel trigger and timed intercourse. I didn't get pregnant... so they bumped me up to femara, ovidrel and timed intercourse. I had a great response again but didn't get pregnant so they bumped me up to injectables (generic HMG), ovidrel and time intercourse. That didn't work either and I was fed up because they gave me no reason for why it wasn't (eggs were big enough on all medications and all other tests were normal). So after a break I took my file and went to a different RE 2.5 hours away to get a second opinion (so here's where things changed..)

The new RE did two tests that I didn't realize we hadn't done that turned out to be important (even though at the time I was mad to pay for more tests...). He ordered an AMH test that tests your ovarian reserve to rule out an ovarian reserve problem. That test came back high so they could finally diagnose PCOS. The second test was a semen analysis with a Kruger strict morphology. I didn't realize that most semen analysis is the WHO standard that doesn't include this test because (usually) only fertility clinics can perform the test. Anyway that test came back low which meant that even though his count and motility always tested normal, the fertilization rate was not good..

So the new RE said that there wasn't any reason why we should go to IVF until we did IUI. I was very skeptical and tired of the run around but I agreed. They put me on clomid since I had always responded to it and did an ultrasound on cycle day 11. I had 3 follicles and they waited 3 more days to trigger with ovidrel and then did the IUI the next day. 14 days later I found out I was pregnant and am currently 5 months pregnant from only one egg out of the three. Good luck and I hope you find some answers!

Oh no. I am so sorry to hear this. How awful and heartbreaking :(

As far as Clomid goes, I just wanted to repeat what the others have said about being monitored during your cycles by an RE. It's so important to know how you are responding. Good luck.

  • I did 3 unmonitored cycles of clomid(raising the dosage each time) with my gyn and then saw my RE. Into my 1st monitored cycle he did post-coital test... All the sperm were dead. We could have done TI for another 2 years with no success. We ultimately have 2 children thanks to 50mg of clomid, trigger and IUI.
  • So sorry to hear about the house fire!
    Hope things are ok now.

Just wanted to share a success with you. I was successful using clomid and TI with my son! I got pregnant on my 4th cycle of clomid on 150mg. (I didnt respond to anything lower). I was being monitored by my OB, which seems to be rare.

I tried a couple of cycles of clomid ttc#2 without success, so you never know!

Good luck! Hope it works for you
