Formula in Sippy cups?

Have any of you tried putting formula in a sippy cup in preparation for switching over to milk? I feel like DD really likes her bottles and usually her cups are only for water and juice (rarely). Do you think it's smart to try and switch over to sippy cups before introducing milk or do the opposite, put milk in the bottle first and get her used to milk then switch over to a cup? I know I still have a month, just trying to figure this all out! Thanks!

  • Thanks! Yeah I figured maybe I'd start trying it to see how she does.

  • With all of my older kids, we did a no milk in bottle and no formula in sippy strategy. My pediatrician recommended that we not confuse the two and it worked well for my older two kids. Starting at 11.5 months, we would drop one bottle and replace it with a sippy of milk and each week, drop another until we were fully on sippies of milk. They didn't drink much of the milk (and would hold off for a formula bottle) until a few days after we were totally on sippies of milk, but one day it clicked; they realized that bottles/formula were gone and that the milk was what they had to drink and they started chugging it and never looked back. It was a great way to just get off of bottles and formula easily, without confusing them at all. They never expected milk in bottles or formula in sippies, so we never had to deal with weaning them from that too. But, I say go for whatever works for you guys, all babies are different, so just because that strategy worked for us, doesn't mean it's best for you! Just my two cents! :)

  • @sdb421 I like that idea!

I gave LO some formula in a sippy straw cup once but he didn't take to it at all. He drank a few drinks but mostly played with it. I think I'm going to try the no formula in sippy cups thing.

  • We started and found she like a lot (it sounds like) is resistant to formula in the sippy - so I started pushing on it more - askign them to do it at daycare - holding bottles out for later - now at daycare she'll down it in a cup.. still not at home though.

I think it depends - if your kid likes the bottle more then the formula or the formula more then the bottle.. and it will vary.  For us I think the bottle is her "down time" so I've tried to read her books, cuddle with her and her bink - and then offer her formula in a cup with a snack instead of a bottle.

I do like the no formula in sippy no milk in the bottle method but I'm very fearful that transition to milk is going to be long and painful - getting off bm was hard for us. (goign to formula)

Ds2 has been using sippy cups full time since 8 months. If your lo likes them go for it! I still have a ton of breastmilk in the freezer so I will be mixing cows milk and breastmilk for quite a while once we start transitioning.

We never had a problem with ds1 transitioning from breastmilk to cows milk.
