Why all the stupid badges on the right hand side?

Why is there a constant stream of people earning badges on the right hand side of my screen?  WHO CARES?!  It appears that they aren't even telling me the badges that I earned, just whatever random person earned a 100 Love Its badge, or whatever.  Why would anyone want to know that crap?  All I care about (and I don't care that much about this either) is the badges that I myself earn.
