Would you call the OB?

So for the last week (or two, I don't even know honestly) I have been having a lot of clear, very thin discharge. There is nothing mucous-y about it at all.

The other night it was so bad I got up after sitting down for awhile and it was like I had peed my pants, but at the time I kind of just thought my ass was sweating excessively in addition to the normal discharge so I didn't put a lot of thought into it.

Well today, I got to thinking, I wonder if that could be amniotic fluid leaking? Considering the fact that it is always so clear and thin and nothing like regular vaginal discharge that I ever had prior to getting pregnant. Also, like I said it has been going on for the last week or two though....if it was amniotic fluid leaking would it have gone on that long without any other symptoms do you think?

Any other ladies who have experienced this in current or prior pregnancies? Does anyone know if there are any other symptoms to watch out for to determine whether it's actually a possibility of leaking fluid and something I should call my OB about?

I will probably call my OB tomorrow anyway just for some peace of mind, but ugh, I always get frustrated having to call them (I've only had to call twice, but it's still irritating). I can't ever talk to the Dr....and they always ask me my symptoms but always just have the nurse call me back which sometimes takes an hour or so....and then it's not like they even relayed the message to the nurse at all so it's like why did I even bother telling the receptionist what was going on?

Also, the other two times I have called the nurse tells me, if it gets worse just go to the hospital, and I guess I just don't understand why they can't just get me in to see me instead of sending me to the hospital. Ugh, sorry, that was probably an unneeded vent about my OB's office. Anyone else have an OB that works the same way? Maybe it's normal, I don't know.

Anyway, thanks for any advice!

  • Do you have an on-call OB? That's who I called when I was in the accident. I explained what happened to her and she asked me to come in.

Also, I don't know if this is like all hospitals, but at ours if you are past 20 weeks, you go to labor and delivery instead of the emergency room anyway. Because I had called ahead, the emergency room was ready for me and immediately plopped me into a wheelchair and took me to labor & delivery.

Oh yes, because possibly totally normal discharge deserves a trip to the ER! OP, don't do this! Your OB is much better equipped to properly diagnose and treat you. I am sure you're fine but definitely call for peace of mind.
    This.

Geez, I wonder how many times SweetPriz has gone to the ER. Unless she was using the sarcasm font. Hmmmmm.

I get so frustrated when people automatically say go to the ER.  I had an emergency 2 years ago and when I think about IF there were a bunch of freaked out pregnant women ahead of me, my appendix could've burst it pisses me off.  Yes, there are reasons to go to the ER while pregnant, but this isn't one of them.

Call your OB and get it checked out.

  • Call your OB. Sounds like normal discharge though. It can be really excessive at times. I've had copious amounts as well. Nothing a nice panty liner won't fix though. Don't make a trip to the ER, it's not an emergency. They would send you to L&D anyways in which they would probably call your OB, or have you see the on-call OB, so you might as well just skip that step and call your OB yourself and save yourself the copay.

  • Your discharge will change throughout the pregnancy.  Put on a pad and you will be able to examine it better.  IF you start having contractions with the watery discharge then I would go to the ER.

Wow if you don't eve know don't talk it was my first time going and I got sent by my doc and you don't even know how scary it is to think your water broke and you might loose your baby and I did end up staying for three days to make sure and lab test to return and I really hope it doesn't happen to anybody else
  • But hope everything goes well and it's not that good luck :)

You just said you got sent to the ER by your doctor, so you obviously did the same thing that was suggested to OP which was to call her doctor first. So why would you advise going straight to ER without seeing what her OB said first. Confused.

  • Call the OB, yes, probably (though it sounds normal to me, it's worth getting checked out if you are worried). Go to the ER... no. Not without being advised to do so by the on-call physician.

Ok I'm sorry I suggested ... At end if she thinks it something to go for go for it if not then don't .. Also on my first msg I said something like that happen to me but not exactly what happen to her but again sorry if I offended people by suggesting the ER !.
  • To my knowledge, after a certain point in pregnancy (15 weeks?) you will be turned away by the ER anyways.  Any issue like this should be directed to the OB automatically.  ER staff are not equipped to handle pregnancy issues.

No, no need to apologize but you could have said something like...I had this happen to me and my Dr had me go to ER. But no, you made it sound like "OMG Holy F$&!@....get there now or else"

Oh, and please use periods in your lovely responses. You obviously know the exclamation point, the period is close to that one.

ETA: quote fail...sorry. Should be apparent to whom this directed :)

  • Definitely call the Dr. and ask about it, but it sounds like normal heavy discharge. With my last pregnancy one of my amniotic sacs started leaking in the middle of the night. I got up to pee and I couldn't stop peeing. It wasn't a big gush like you hear about it was a constant trickle down my legs. I called the dr. They told me to go in. By the time I got to the ER (maybe 10minutes). My pants were pretty close to being soaked.
Doesn't quite sound the same, but it won't hurt to call, that's what they are being payed for.
