CoSleeping Bed Rails or Similar

What do you use? How well and for what ages does your system work?
I'm not excited about putting our brand new king mattress on the floor (but I will if I absolutely have to), and I just got some advice to maybe buy some for my parent's house to use when traveling... so what do you do?  Bed rail on both sides? What about the bottom? I've seen on Pinterest where some people put pool noodles under the sheets?  That doesn't seem like it could contain a crawler.  What about those huge co-sleeper bed pillows? If you have one, what do you do for naps if you don't stay in bed with them the whole time?
Discuss!  Thank you!
(as you can see I've been storing up my Bump post questions for a few weeks and I finally got a minute to post! I miss TB so much, but as a new mom of twins I'm so busy these days I can barely brush my teeth! LOL)

Re: CoSleeping Bed Rails or Similar

  • We use the Safety First bed rail https://www.walmart.com/ip/Safety-1st-Secure-Top-Bed-Rail/21578349

DS is 11.5 months.  I just have the bed rail on my side of the bed.  Before DS was super mobile, I slept with him by the rail and me in the middle and DH on the other side of the bed.  However, now that DS crawls and can climb, I have him sleep in between DH and me so that we will wake if he wakes and starts to crawl/climb around.  We serve as his "rails".  The safety first rail doesn't cover the entire length of the bed, so I would say it prevents them from rolling off but wouldn't prevent a crawling from crawling to the end and going over the side.

I have to admit that DS fell out of bed last week.  DH had gotten up and I didn't realize it, and DS rolled/crawled off the other side.  He was fine, but it was scary.

I don't put anything at the foot of the bed, but I did get nervous about the gap between the mattress and our headboard.  I stuffed my pregnancy pillow in the gap and it works great.  It was a great use for that pillow.

In terms of naps, I now put DS in his crib for naps.  I used to stack pillows up around him in our bed to create a barrier, but he is just too good at climbing now, it was no longer safe.  It's nice to nap when the LO's are napping on occasion, but really his naptime is the only time I get anything done on the weekends, so I don't want to lie there with him.

How old is your LO?  DS napped in the Moby for the first 4 months of his life, and it worked great for both of us.
