Wool covers

Hi all :)  Some questions for all of you wool experts out there in Bump Land:

Do I have to wash and lanolize my wool cover when I first get it?

What is the best detergent out there?

How often will I have to wash it if I plan on only using it for naps and nightime?

What do you find works best under the cover?  I planned on trying out Thirsties Fab Fitted's.  Anyone have experience using these or have another suggestion?

Does the wool keep baby pretty warm?

Any other wisdom is most appreciated!!  TIA!!!

Re: Wool covers

  • 1) yes,you need to wash it first, then lanolize. 2) the best lanoline soap, for me is the sheepish grins. A lot of people like eucalan wool wash.but I prefer using the wool bar soap. 3) I usually do it once a month,or as need it.but I think is depending of you how often you wants to do it. 4) for night times,I use a fitted diaper, with one extra hemp insert. I like baby kicks fitted, they good for LO,when they sleep on their side or in their tummy. I also like tiny tush fitted. And for naps I like kiwi pie from grovia. 5) yes, wool keep them very warm as well cool in a hot days.my LO sleep just with a soaker and a shirt. Good luck

  • Hi all :)  Some questions for all of you wool experts out there in Bump Land:

Do I have to wash and lanolize my wool cover when I first get it? Yes - I usually wash/lanolize, dry completely, and then lanolize a second time before I use my new wool covers.  I've tried to lanolize just once, and we always have leaks.

What is the best detergent out there? We use eucalan wool wash and lansinoh lanolin.

How often will I have to wash it if I plan on only using it for naps and nightime? We don't use wool for nap times, because DD only typically naps 45-90 minutes (so she's fine in a regular diaper).  We do use it every night though.  I usually wash/lanolize every 3-4 weeks, however our current diaper hasn't needed it in almost 5 weeks... And it still has zero smell and no leaks.  I'll probably try to get to it this weekend...

What do you find works best under the cover?  I planned on trying out Thirsties Fab Fitted's.  Anyone have experience using these or have another suggestion?  We use fitteds under our wool, but plenty of people use prefolds (with a snappi) and an extra insert or two.  We use SBish OBFs or Tots Bots Bamboozles - I guess our preference right now would be for the bamboozles.  My advice would be to buy no more than 2 fitteds of the same brand - try them and make sure you like them before you invest in more.

Does the wool keep baby pretty warm?  I don't notice any temperature change in DD whether she wears wool or a PUL cover.

Any other wisdom is most appreciated!!  TIA!!!
