STM... When will you "unpack" your gear?

My infant stuff is stored in a bunch of different places (attic, garage, basement) and will all need to be cleaned/gathered. At what point are you planning on hauling things out? I can't help but feel like I should get these things a little more organized, but it seems too early to clean them so I'm not sure there's a real reason to. What are you doing with any new things as you get them? Storing them with the used for now, or keeping them separate/unopened in a closet somewhere? What's your game plan?

Re: STM... When will you "unpack" your gear?

  • We have most of our stuff in our downstairs closet. I probably won't get stuff out until after 30 weeks, just to avoid the clutter for a while longer.

  • Right now, diapers/wipes that are being purchased for us are being stored in DD's old room, which will be LO's room at some point.  Right now, DH uses that closet and has his dresser in there and that room has kind of been a catch all ever since we moved DD.  With that being said, I probably won't start pulling out my infant toys/car seats/clothes til around November or so.  I'm not excited to have baby crap everywhere again, so I'm going to wait as long as I can!

  • I'm in a weird living situation. My parents bought a new home right when we moved back to our home town. We are going to rent out their previous home from them but they can't move into their new house until next month so we are all living together until next month. Our stuff is in storage and I will take it all out next month. I'll wash it, organize it, and figure out what things need to be replaced.

  • Probably not until we have the nursery set up where the guest room is now so I have a place to put everything.  We can't set up the nursery until we get DS transitioned to his "big boy bed".  We won't start that until October or November.  So, it will probably be November/December before I get around to cleaning/organzing baby things.

  • H has everything piled up in the spare bedroom. We will probably go through it all around 30-32 weeks. Procrastinator FTW! I did a decent job of keeping the sizes separated so it's just a matter of finding the right tote. H will set all of the equipment up probably the week before labor, to keep DD out of everything.

  • No unpacking here.

I just have to buy it.

Guess that is the 'bonus' for a 6.5 age diff.

  • We find out the gender this weekend.  We'll slowly start getting the room ready and moving things around soon after.  I feel like its going to be a little here and a little there. :)

  • Um. January (I'm due 29th). Only the car-seat earlier. If anything unexpected happens DH and my parents can always drag those things out of the basement and clean them.

  • My baby clothes are sorted and were washed when I put them away - but i want to wash everything again.  I want to set up the room first - I moved the dresser we will use and the glider in their already - but I need to paint, decorate and get DS sleeping in his big boy bed so I can move the crib in. I also am going to get my neighbour to redo the closet so I can't move clothes/stuff in until after that. I figure I'll really get moving by late October - I love to be ready and organized and it will probably keep me up at night if I don't have it done early.

I was thinking of picking a paint colour soon and getting DH to do that in September.

  • Um, we have SOOO much to do before "unpacking" for this LO. But, we need to transition DD to a big girl bed (it's been a disaster when we've tried so far) so we can use her crib, but we do have a 2nd if needed. I hope to buy and install a carseat before my birthday (Oct 14) because DH can't do it right. But, before we do that, we need to fix my van door.

GAH!!! Crap, now I have to take vacation time to get it all done!!! (j/k)

  • We just cleaned out our storage unit yesterday with all the stuff.  I'm ready to start getting stuff organized with hopes it will get me excited about getting the nursery done.  I would REALLY like everything ready before Thanksgiving (due jan 4 and don't want to deal with it during December or when I'm the size of a cow).  However, it seems our weekends are booking up fast between now and then.  2.5 months to get everythign ready SOUNDS like a long time, but I know better.  I'll probably slowly start washing and organizing things within the next week or 2.

Now, if someone can help me pick out decor for the nursery, I'd be SUPER happy!

  • My spare room/new nursery is all cleared out except the queen bed.  That will go as soon as furniture arrives.  Furniture will be ordered and received sometime in OCT.  I hope to have most things sorted and in place before Thanksgiving.

  • We will probably do all our unpacking of stuff sometime in early December, probably after we decorate for Christmas. Have a huge to-do list before we get to that point, like get DS's big boy room ready. If baby come early there isn't much that he will need other than car seat and clothes. Our PnP with bassinet takes all of 4 minutes to set up.

  • My sister has been all too happy to get it out of her basement and in to my house, regardless of my due date. So we have been taking stuff every time we see her. It won't be functional or assembled until late fall or December though.

  • My stuff is all in our basement. I probably won't start going through it until December, though.

  • Soooo.....I started going through, washing, and hanging what I could this week. I feel like we have so much to do with getting DS's room ready and then the nursery. I feel like time is going by so quickly and I would like to have most everything done before the holidays so I can enjoy the holiday fun and not be stressed.
  • I plan to start unpacking in the next few weeks.  The next 4 months are insanely busy for me so I can start unpacking after my A/S that is on Friday.  We moved DD into her new room last week and I started moving all her stuff over.  It is quite the process.

I just don't want it to be Jan and have a lot of stuff to do. I'm a big fan of do it now and rest later.
  • Maybe in December after the tree goes down immediately after Christmas.  I have to put away anything DS doesn't need anymore, clean out all of the extra blankets and non-kid-or-baby stuff from his closet, then either unpack his baby stuff that will work for a winter boy or just buy all new girl stuff.

  • Probably December. I will buy the carseat and other things we need at that time, so why not just do it all around the same time. I DO however want to just go through all the baby clothes and donate a bunch too, we had waaaay too much with our son.
  • We set up the nursery furniture this weekend, and I hauled a few items into a downstairs closet to go through later. Bigger baby items like the swing, bouncer, bassinet, etc. are still stored in the garage, and I won't bring them out until probably early December just to avoid the clutter as long as possible. Items that are going in the nursery will come in gradually and probably earlier.

  • I don't really know.  I'm trying to hold off for awhile b/c we really don't have room for it right now.  As #2 will be sharing a room with DD I'd like to have some more time to organize before we get all the old stuff out.  So i'll probably spend some time organizing DD's stuff, then probably in December when i get down all the Christmas stuff i will get out the baby stuff too.  I just don't know where it's all going to go!

  • We have so much to do!! DS is moving rooms, so we need to paint and move rooms. Then paint the nursery for a girl! I started going through some of DS clothes- but none of the stuff that's stored. But we need to! Probably after both rooms are ready to move items into them. New things are being stored in the garage. We need to get moving!! The next 19 weeks will go by fast!!!
  • I'm taking three weeks off before my due date, so the stuff will come out then? Maybe earlier if my mom wants to help when she comes for a visit.

It's really too hard to do anything productive with my toddler around :)

We are buying a new carseat and I will grab a few new newborn outfits, just in case the baby makes an early arrival before we are ready :)
