anyone have an au pair?

We are weighing the option of getting an au pair since we both work long hours. we have a finished basement with a full bath where she would be able to stay so its separate from us, but I am still concerned about having my own space/someone in my house full time. what are your thoughts on this? when i get home from a very long day at work, i just want to be alone with DS and then with DH when he gets home a little later. I dont want to hang out and chat with anyone, im very selfish about my time with DS. thoughts?

Re: anyone have an au pair?

  •  Yes..i did post something on care.com and have gotten a ton of responses...a few did say the hours were a bit long (630 to a minimum of 6pm) which i was surprised about it. although i know 630am is early, thats the job ya know? I will keep all options open but yes, an au pair probably wouldnt work. Thank you!

My concerns with an au par would be that they don't offer enough coverage for a "long" hours. Au pairs can only work 45 hours a week.

In terms of alone time -- I think au pairs often make friends and are out of the house after their hours are done. However you can't make them out of the house if you know what I mean. They are meant to be treated like a member of the family (au pair means = equal to they are not to be treated as servants)

I think you want a nanny who lives out. Plenty of nannies work 50+ hour weeks and then after that they go home leaving your family space to you.
