Riddle me this

I work in a spa, part time, as a massage therapist. I am an employee and paid commission. Every spa that I have worked at gives you commission and tips but no hourly rate. If you have a slow day you may or may not get paid BUT your job would be in jepordy if you decided to leave before your shift was up. This is the norm but seems pretty screwy to me. Wtf? I'm in ny if that matters...just wondering what the norm is here. It seems to be the industry standard and probably won't change :(

Re: Riddle me this

  • I have no idea bc I'm not in the industry. I am member of a massage chain and according to Glassdoor they are paid hourly plus commission.  If you're unsure of the normal standards in NY, I would call around to other spas and inquire about opportunities and salaries. Working 100% commission can be tough.
