Cloth Diapering

Charlie Banana diapers leaking overnight- out of waist/back? Tips on correct fit??? Help!

Wondering if this is a fit issue? Assuming it is... here's the low-down...sorry if it seems scattered...DD is just now 3 mo- 12 ish lbs. We have Charlie Banana OS diapers with their factory MF inserts. Daytime we use a single insert, night we use 2 liners and are experiencing a wet baby most mornings. She usually sleeps 10 hrs before waking up to feed, and sometimes she's only just gotten the back of her sleeper wet and other times it's just soaked....waking up dry is becoming more and more rare. It doesn't appear to be out of the legs- the wetness is definitely on her back. We just recently adjusted the waist from the smallest setting to the next snap up. Legs are at second smallest snap and the elastic set to "S".....did we adjust the waist snaps too soon? I've heard of "compression leaks"- but don't know how to tell if I have one. What are the telltale signs? They come from over-stuffing, correct?

And in general, I feel like I'm in the dark on sizing these with her...not sure when it's too tight/loose! Any tips/tricks from you pros?

I love cloth, but find myself feeling clueless with some of these finer points- help me please! Thank you!!!

  • Are the inserts soaked? For overnight, I would guess you need more absorbency than 2 MF inserts, even at 3 months, like a couple of bamboo inserts and a hemp insert, or a fitted with a cover.

  • you need more absorbency, definintely.

compression leaks happen with microfiber-when the insert is soaked and baby moves/rolls onto it, the pee "compresses" out and you get leaks.  it's not from overstuffing, but using mf

if the elastic around the legs is correct, after putting the dipe on baby, lift her legs up toward her head.  If there are no gaps, the fit is good.  If you see a gap, you need it tighter.  for the waist, you want it snug, but not digging in

  • I second the PP.  My 3 month old just started soaking the Rumparooz two microfiber inserts and he only sleeps a max of 8 hours.  We played around with hemp, bamboo, and microfiber combos with some success.  Now we're back to Sbish fitteds and wool for no leaks.

I'd suggest getting some good hemp inserts to pair with your microfiber.  If that doesn't work, get some dedicated nighttime fitted diapers.

Thank you everyone! The inserts sometimes are pretty saturated.

I was looking into buying some 3 layer bamboo inserts from Alva- but reading through some old posts they sound like they are a pain in bunching up and not staying put. I see they have a 4 layer MF/Bamboo insert that seems to have a reputation of being just as absorbent but less likely to move around and cause troubles. Is one way better than the other or is it just a matter of preference? If the 3 layer bamboo inserts aren't as tricky as they seem to sound I'd rather use them to keep the diapers a bit more trim....plus since MF seems to cause more problems then it's worth I'd like to avoid getting any MORE of it!

I'm starting to venture into exploring the wool/fitted option as well- I've always heard before that wool is a pain to clean and keep lanolized. That seems like the better long-term way to go. I just keep over-complicating it all in my head for whatever reason...

Thank you again ladies- you've been very helpful and I'm sure hearing the same questions all the time does take patience :)
  • I use a larger sized unbleached cotton prefolds in a trifold in our pockets and that has been working well for our 3 1/2 month old overnight. I change him when he wakes up to nurse but that is 7 hours in one diaper on the nights that I work and we haven't had any leaks.

  • The Alva (and Kawaii) bamboo inserts do bunch up.  I've had good luck putting two together or pairing it with MF or hemp.
